My DD with same GPA, test optional and similar EC’s also got in but was deferred from Auburn.
Great points. And while it seems they haven’t looked in-depth yet at essays, extracurricular, etc, maybe there are things that stand out on some apps. They may also be considering diversity and extenuating circumstances. And diversity to include geographic diversity, etc. I live in a town in the Midwest with fantastic schools. And for some reason, at least 15 people that my child knows have decided to apply to USC this year. So if you are applying from somewhere in Montana, for example, with the exact same stats you may have a better shot! Best of luck to all, especially my deferred child, lol.
For everyone concerned about scholarships my son was deferred two years ago (class of 2020) with a 3.8 and a 31 ACT. Not many extracurriculars and no outstanding work experience although he did have good volunteer experience. He was then accepted in February into his first choice of Darla Moore and asked into USC’s Capstone Scholars Program and given a scholarship that basically brought him to in-state tuition (I don’t remember the exact amount). I realize things have changed, even in two years, but maybe there is still a good bit of scholarship money to be awarded. Good luck!
Accepted with full OOS tuition waiver 4.1 WGPA 35 ACT
8 AP classes Mostly Honors classes
Does anyone know whether biology is a competitive major at south carolina?? I am considering changing my first choice major.
My DD has a 3.96 UW and deferred. Now waiting for the rest of the decisions.
Huge increases in applications at many popular colleges over the past 2 application rounds. Many families “shot-gunning” a large number of applications to ensure the best choices for admission and merit opportunities. Colleges have to wade through applications and determine which students will actually attend if offered admission. Yield protection may make them wonder whether someone with a 36 ACT applied there as a safety/merit hunt while they wait to hear from T10 schools.
Since my D13’s application cycle, schools like UofSC, UGA, Clemson, UNCC, etc. are no longer a safe bet for admission for the middle 50%. Many have bumped up their stat requirements. D21 applied to many of the same colleges as D13, but with significantly higher test scores, and she (D21) surprisingly received less merit at the same colleges that D13 received very generous awards. That tells me that merit awards overall have decreased too (or are being spread out over more applicants). D21 received less merit from UofSC than D13 but received an additional amount when invited to Capstone.
Totally agree! For another school my son is in a SEA of green and just got put at a satellite campus for 2 years. We knew going into this year it would be a mystery, it certainly is living up to that!!! Very upsetting when you feel like not submitting scores (which these kids worked hard to achieve) seem to be hurting them…
South Carolina in particular is challenging because of the threshold for merit and the honors college compared to other schools. For example, we know a high stats student this year who applied OOS for both Georgia and SC. 3.85 UW 1490 Sat. He got into Georgia EA full pay. Just got into SC honors with in-state tuition. 75K less for four years in honors SC vs. Georgia regular admit.
Post above refers to student admitted to University of South Carolina Honors - anyone else receive acceptance? If so please share stats.
I think that’s misinformation as USC Honors College acceptance notification is Mid -Feb per their website.
I didn’t realize that the Honors College had announced acceptances yet. The earliest I’ve ever heard in the past was the end of December. My son got in as an OOS to the college, no Honors yet word yet. He got 86k to put him at in state tuition. He is in the top 3% of his class, 8 DE (4 more next semester) and 2 AP with a 4.0 unweighted GPA, 35 ACT, Eagle Scout, volunteers, works and normal school extracurriculars. He really wants the Honors College, not sure if I should mention that others are already getting accepted.
Per this thread from last year, it seems that Honors College announcements came out in December.
@jmdpdheieio my D19 heard after Christmas about the Honors College, so that is what I expected this year. My D22 will be disappointed to hear that he didn’t get in.
I went and looked and last year there was a round of acceptances of high stat kids on 12/23 but the majority did not hear until February so no need to worry if your student doesn’t have an update yet- it might not come until February. It would be nice to see the stats of those who do get early acceptance.
Sorry. My error I had the wrong info regarding Honors acceptance
Congratulations everyone on the acceptances. I know this is an EA thread but does anyone have any insight when RD notifications may come out?
Last year it was on 3/15.
Actually there was a round in mid February and another round in mid March
Any Honors College / Top Scholars action starting up out there yet?
