Does anyone know why the common app for this school is asking for middle school classes and grades? It seems so strange and I have never once seen something like this before.
We found it confusing too. I’m going from memory but the algebra and foreign language seemed to make sense but then it asked about a few classes but didn’t specifically say “in middle school.” Like English 1 if I recall. I honestly am not sure exactly how D22 replied but agree it was weird.
My son is a freshman at UofSC this year and we did not have to do anything like this when he applied last year. I don’t know why middle school grades would matter whatsoever. It is so strange to me.
In SC, a lot of 8th grade students take high school credits. We now also have 7th grade taking some including Algebra. Those credits are in the HS GPA and show on the transcript.
Just applied today through the Common App. All we have to do is set up a portal and see if they got everything right? (they said portal login info should be sent 24 hrs after submitting)
For full consideration for general admission, admission to the South Carolina Honors College and the Top Scholars program, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions requires the following items:
Submitted general UofSC application by the October 15 early action deadline.
Submitted Honors College/Top Scholars application (available as a supplement after you submit your general application). This application requires completion of two essay prompts and one short-answer question.
Does anyone have any sense of the admissions rate for the U of SC Honors College? I know they publish the middle 50% GPA and test scores (which seem really high) and they say class rank is typically 1 to 2% (which again seems super high). I would like to know what % of kids that apply get accepted. thx!
The honors college is competitive with high achieving students getting accepted and those who do not quite have all the stats just missing being accepted. As I have noted SC has a weighted GPA where instate most kids would getting accepted have a 4.5 or higher, not sure of OOS, but unweighted GPA would be close to a 3.8 to 4.0 probably.
But most of those top kids really want the UofSC Top Scholars opportunities with the specialized study abroad programs like in the international business majors. There are interview rounds and they are accepted into programs where they know they are spending a semester or year during their sophomore or Junior year in Peru or Hong Kong, etc…not all of them get those offers or their first choice. These are the top kids going to the top rated High Schools in the country that they are attracting.
All that said, there does seem to be some movement once final decisions are made and some kids enroll at other schools.
I originally thought it was supposed to be 12/01, but they must’ve changed to Mid-December somewhere along the line because that is what the website says now. I was so sure it had said Dec 1, but who knows - we looked at so many college websites I could be confusing it with a different school. So I’m “guessing” maybe the 17th?? Hopefully earlier
