University of South Carolina Rolling Admissions has Begun

Congrats to all of you! My son is a freshman, just finished his first semester. He's in Capstone and absolutely loves USC. Had a great first semester and made lots of friends.
WoodPost, if you didn't apply for Honors, you will still be automatically considered for Capstone. I would urge you to consider becoming a Capstone scholar. My son didn't want to apply for Honors - he actually like the Capstone dorm and has been very happy. He's in engineering and his whole floor is engineering majors.

on the sc website eveything has been recently checked off. however it still says decision pending and i applied on october 28. a while back my app fee (obviously paid online) wasnt checked off so i called the admissions office and they said they had it. then they didnt update the website for another week and a half. does this mean im on the waiting list or is sc just having some issues? i would like to know their decision sometime...

BTown
don't be afraid to call admissions and find out your status they are very friendly.

i called them in december and they said that they were working on it...

when should I get mine, I sent my application on October 7th

You will hear by the end of March - have you logged into the website and checked to see if they have all your credentials?

from the website:

[quote]
Students who apply by December 1st will receive a decision no later than the end of March 2008. Decisions in March may include acceptance for Fall 2008 or Spring 2009, denial, or wait list until mid-May. Applicants who meet our deadlines and post very strong academic records will generally hear from us within a few weeks, since the SC Honors College and top scholarship deadlines fall early in the admissions cycle. On the other hand, applicants who barely meet our minimum requirements are likely to receive delayed decisions.

yes I've checked and everthing has been checked off for awhile

yay I got accepted to the prebusiness program

Congratulations!

Amend my post above to read: "You should be hearing any day now!" ;)

Ok, so when is the first day I can apply?

I think LSU will let you apply really early, like in July and they will get back to you by the end of the summer, maybe even the end of July. When is the soonest USC will let you apply?

Now, say I apply in the summer/early fall, get accepted really quick. Scholarships… I’m a junior and I’ve got a pretty good GPA, about 3.85 UW, about 4.2 W, but my standardized testing is…meh. Took a practice ACT and got a 28(winter Soph year), so I’m hoping for at least a 30, aiming for a 32. Same with the SAT/PSAT. Took a practice PSAT and got a 177(Spring Soph year), so I guess that comes out to about a 1770. Again I’m hoping for at least a 2000, aiming for 2100. Now I have to get around to studying…

Ok, so the main gist of my question. Say I apply in August 2010, get in the end of Sept with a 30 ACT. But say I’m aiming for the McNair. A 30 probably won’t cut it. That should at least get me in-state tuition and maybe a little more, right(I’m OOS)? But say I take the SAT or ACT after I get accepted and get the score I want 2100 or 32.
Will it be to late for the McNair scholarship? Should I just wait until like Nov. to apply, with a couple more tests under my belt? But it would be awfully nice to get accepted to a school really early in my senior year.

Thanks, kind of a long question.

General undergrad app is probably already a/v online. The Honors College requires a supplement, which is a pretty intense application.Consideration for the McNair comes from that Honors app.
The U uses only the first two scores of the SAT so figure your score w/o the reading portion. For 2009, the average HONORS SAT score was 1410. Thats just for Honors, I havent seen data on the McNair scores alone but you can imagine they would be pretty high.11/15 was the app deadline for the Honors supplement in 2008, and that includes all the req pieces, like recommendations. If you just file the general undergrad app and admissions thinks you are a candidate for Honors they will let you know to file the supplement (if you havent already).
In the past, what admissions has done is give OOS students a scholarship at some level of $$ (if they are qualified) at the time they are admitted (or shortly thereafter). Then, if they are being considered for the McNair they will be contacted sometime in Jan/Feb. The interview weekend was in March. If you are awarded the McNair, it takes the place of the other college awarded merit scholarship. If however, you are a National Merit Scholar Finalist, the McNair is given in addition to the award given by USC for NMF. The University also awards departmental scholarships, sometimes by an extra app, but these seem to be given AFTER the student sends in their enrollment deposit.
Hope the timeline and SAT info helps. The McNair is based on more than #'s alone. They consider service, leadership, work history, etc. Its an excellent opportunity and well worth trying for.

Wow, I didn’t realize the average SAT was that high, 1410. I still think I could get in with at least a 1350; I’m decently well-rounded, I’m an Eagle Scout, active in school, etc…

But who knows how competitive it will be next year. But USC sounds like a really awesome school to go to and could really be a bargain.

Thanks

Just FYI though, SC doesn’t do rolling admissions anymore. It’s just EA (deadline this year is 10/15 - hear back around 12/15).
