She lived in Callaway. Outrageous in my opinion and not sure I would spend the $ again but the trade off was I knew she would be a resident after freshman year so I was willing to do it.
Thank you @srparent15
Any summer course recommendations for ECE students ?
They offer a discount on summer school if youāre a Texas resident of 25% off full price. Last year it was 50% off due to covid. Good classes to get out of the way in summer school are the higher level English requirements.
I know many kids take summer school at community colleges also, but if you are in a hard major and want a grade boost, it may be good to take it at UT except it can be pricey which is a bummer. But itās still a good way to get rid of some of the Gened requirements if you ask me.
thanksā¦ if you dont mind me asking furtherā¦ what did you guys do after freshmen year, bought a condo or something like that? in which general area?
We bought a condo. To get residency after freshman year if you buy a property, you have to have bought it by something like the 10th day before school starts freshman year. You have to own it for a full year (or something like 11 months) before you can apply for residency. We bought ours in May before the Fall semester. Itās worked out well.
how do i get communication from the school i.e. the presidents emails, dates of orientation, parents weekend etc? much appreciated!
kids sign up for orientation on their UT portal, the dates are there alsoā¦not sure when or if theyāre already there, but itās virtual this year
- canāt remember how I wound up on the email list for the school email, maybe through the parent associationā¦iāll try to check my email and circle back in a few daysā¦if I donāt, please ask again because I probably forgot
Hereās one page where you can get a lot of info. You definitely want to join the Parent association. You get a ton of discounts too which is helpful for hotels etc.
Any advice for freshman on registering courses and when to apply for credit transfers.I hear classes fill up pretty fast. My kid will be in CS and will have some credit transfers from high school.
You canāt claim your AP credit until your scores are sent over by AP and thereās no real hurry because you donāt get any benefit of priority registration with the hours until second semester freshman year. If heās taking AP tests this year then wait until after these tests and have all scores sent over at once so you only have to pay one time. He can tell his advisor what his scores are at orientation.
There is no benefit to signing up for an earlier orientation over another. The same number of seats are reserved per section of each course per orientation section which is nice as I just found out for my son at Michigan itās first come first serve which is awful since it is probably before AP scores, so his last tests he will have to take a guess.
My daughter has never had problem getting the classes she wants other than one class that she was waitlisted for first semester this year which was hybrid and much smaller than normal. Instead she took something else she needed and it worked out well. Your son wil lstill need plenty of required non-CS courses which a lot of students take freshman year like the UGS requirement, visual studies requirement, and some others, so there are many options to find to take those. Not sure if he needs the FIGS too, mine didnāt in McCombs but the advisors will address all of that.
CS courses can be hard to get but things usually work out, especially if itās your major since they arenāt usually open to non CS majors. Or at least certain courses arenāt.
Where do we find whether AP credit will be applied to which UT courses?
EE 306 - Intro to computing - Can AP Computer Science A credit applied?
What about courses like AP Physics C (Mech, E & M), AP Physics 1, 2, AP Chem, Bio - can credit be applied for general education courses for EE major?
Thank you for the detailed information
Is there any website or facebook page for UT Parents where they discuss about dorm setup/shopping. I hear some parents say we can ship to Target or Bed bath that is close by and pick up from there on Move in day.
Thereās the Texas Parents Facebook Group. Itās called āTexas Parents-The Parents Association for the University of Texas at Austinā
Howās everyone doing? Orientations and registration going smoothly? Mine doesnāt attend orientation until July 12, so still waiting on that.
Could somebody please clarify, which forms need to be notarized, since child turned 18 years?
We are in Texas.
Thanks.
