@100lbdog we are from Houston as well. My Son got into McCombs as well. Congratulations to you and your son. what is your email address?
Smclendon429@gmail.com. I look forward to connecting. Sharon
Thank you so much for the information. I told my son to watch his email daily.
thank you so much! I really appreciate the information
@momtexas I have a Plan II question. First, Thank you for such wonderful posts. You are awesome! Taking so much time for othersâŠwe greatly appreciate it.
My son got into McCombs and we just now found out he also got into PLAN II honors as well. Can he mix and match the two? if so has anyone done it? how does it work?
Congratulations. That is terrific news for your son. My husband and brother were both Plan II. My husband was Plan II Government and my brother was Plan II Business (Finance). Your son can most certainly do BOTH and he should have a magnificent experience as a result. I was in college at the same time as my husband. It was hard to compare his university experience to mine as a âregularâ business student. He had early registration, tiny Plan II student only classes and Plan II specific advising. His university experience was beyond unique and impactful on his life. The same is true for my brotherâs experience. While my brother is a finance guru by trade, numbers are his passion, his deep thinking and ability to write with ease have won him many awards at his place of employment (at Microsoft employees are encouraged to submit papers on a variety of topics). A huge congratulations! Texas Fight!
Does anybody know when Engineering Honors are awarded? My sonâs page doesnât show anything yet.
@100lbdog I tried replying back but your email is bouncing back. Not sure if it is my yahoo or yours. tried twice.
@momtexas WOW, is there any thing that you donât know? we so lucky to have you here. THANK YOU.
Yes, over the summer your student will be given a window of time to go online and select dorm and even the individual room.
Most kids in P2 also double major in something else - lots do P2 and Business.
@smithonian29, their website said Cockrell is will send out letters January-March. Iâm anxious to find out too. I wasnât dreaming in a million years that my son would get into honors but since he was admitted so early, now Iâm hopeful that early admission=honors too. He really wants to stay in Carothers or Andrews Honors Quad so being honors would help a great deal. Did your son submit an expanded resume?
Where do most engineering students buy their computer? Is there a UT sponsored partnership with Dell or somebody such that you just go to the website and buy the recommended computer? Or do you have to do a bunch of research on your own and figure it all out by yourself?
@ChillyCow , yes he submitted a resume with his application. Yes, he would also like to stay in the Honors Quad. More quiet, no elevators. Let us know how it goes with his application. Good luck!!
Iâm curious for the admitsâŠdid everyone who has been admitted so far submit the expanded resume? Please put your major and if you submitted an expanded resume or not. I look forward to seeing your comments!
My daughter was admitted OOS Biology. She submitted a resume, but it really wasnât that elaborate (honestly by that point she had run out of steam!)
My longhorn wanted to do this research on his own. His âfinal 4â school list included: U of Wash-Seattle, UT-Austin, U of FL & TAMU. He looked up all their computer recommendations and based on a common list of specs, he ordered his computer. University student rates are offered by many retailers/manufacturers. You do not have to buy thru UT and he wanted it bought early in the summer so he could tinker with it and get all the kinks worked out before school started. Once your prospective Longhorn has all their offers, they can do the same kind of searches on each universityâs site and by calling to the extent necessary. The kids need something to do late spring/early summer and I think he enjoyed the distraction. He loved having time to get it all set up. It is not a bad idea to buy from a place that repairs (whether that is Best Buy or Apple with a care plan or UT or any other schoolâs tech shop). Issues do arise and they will be more likely to get issues fixed if it is convenient and fast. Honestly, that is a mantra I repeat over and over to parents of high school seniors: try to figure out what will be most convenient for your child freshman year of college. Fancy seems less important as safe (priority one) and convenient (priority two). They will do more if they feel safe and have convenient options.
I donât know if this applies to UT, but at the two universities my boys are at you can either buy your computer through the bookstore (or university technology store) and get a warranty or you can buy the computer elsewhere and buy an add-on warranty. The warranty covers breakage, loss, etc., and they can get the computer serviced on campus. For a computer bought off-site there was a time limit I think after you bought that you needed to get the warranty added on. Anyway, again, not sure if there is something like this at UT, but if so that might affect the ideal timing of purchasing the computer.
Great advise from MomTexas. Some basic specs you should have when you buy the laptop and this is what I did with my first UT child. Windows laptop: Get 12 Gig of RAM (memory), 16 is more than enough. Operating system will be windows (donât need to buy windows professional). Make sure you have atleast i5 generation processor, i7 is not necessary. I bought the lenevo 350 model 2 years ago from Costco on sale in April. So keep an eye. Bestbuy is another place i buy from. Always get the extended warranty for kids.
UT installs all the virus applications and Microsoft Office on the laptops free of charge so Donât get them.
This is for kids who are not video game players. If your kids plays then they will tell you what they want.
We bought my daughterâs computer at Costco. It has an extra warranty if bought with the Costco Citicard and was way cheaper than the ones that UT sell. We could replace it 5x for that price. Also for McCombs they want you to use Microsoft which you can run on a Mac. She had a Mac but ultimately found it much easier to get a PC so thatâs what we bought her at Costco and she goes back and forth between the two to suit her needs. It also helped her a lot when she had an internship this summer.
