I am pretty sure it is a wide consensus that Michigan is a more prestigious school, but the question I have is by how much? Is the academic difference that great and will a degree from Michigan be viewed THAT much more superior to UT, or is UT just as powerful a degree from UT? Any insight>

Completely and utterly negligible.

You may want to share your intended major as some people may know specifically about the strength of the programs.

Obviously both are strong schools with strong student bodies and alum networks. But as many will tell you here, it is much more about how you do in a college than what college you went to, particularly if you see grad school in your future.

Generically speaking, Michigan has considerably more prestige (on a national level) than Texas does. However, both colleges have some programs that are excellent, so it really does depend on what you are planning to study. And both schools are well-respected.

For the most part, no. Both universities are very well respected and have strong academics in almost all of their programs.

If you plan on grad/professional school, then it will not matter at all. If you’re not, then it would depend on your major.

I am planning on majoring at Business or Political Science/Government and I am intending on going to get an MBA or JD, so you guys would say both schools are just as good and should not waste the extra money on Out of state at Mich?

Yeah, if you’re in state for Texas, I’d go there.

Absolutely. No contest.

Yup, a huge no-brainer. UT

Just as their would be little reason for anyone from Michigan to pay OOS tuition to attend Texas either if they were admitted to both.

Michigan is more prestigious, but not by much. Ann Arbor probably has one of the Top 5 business schools in the country (you said you wanted an MBA)…but Austin probably has one of the Top 10 or at the very least Top 15 business schools, which is still incredibly prestigious.

It’s also a lot harder to get into Michigan. But you should clearly go to UT in your situation, if your looking for prestigious and that’s it, because that’s not a reason to choose UM over UT. The value of in-state tuition at Texas however is a huge reason to chose UT over UM. There may be other reasons to choose UM over UT – do you like snow? do you want to work in Chicago or Houston? do you like the feel of Austin or Ann Arbor better? is the cost a factor, or do you have significant finaid?

Those are distinguishing factors, unless you feel ambivalent toward Chicago or Houston and could care less about snow or about having the sun most of the year. Prestige is not a big enough difference for it to be a distinguishing factor.
