I recently got accepted to UofT faculty of Arts and Sciences into the victoria college for second year entry into Rotman commerce, and I just thought that it would be cool to start a thread for all recently admitted UofT students joining in the fall of 2011. Any admitted student from any campus and from any college can feel free to comment, ask questions etc. Through this thread we can probably get to know each other, and perhaps get an idea of the kind of people we will be meeting in September.

However, not any real discussion has taken place on those pages yet. Hopefully, all those joining UofT in fall can discuss on this thread. Also, make sure you mention your campus, residence and course when commenting.

Yo industrial engineering…St George… New College res i think? i havent been informed or residence yet!!! It wasnt in the letter of acceptance…but pumped to go cant wait to join the baseball team

Hi there I got in st george victoria college…life sciences Freshmann year (so Im soo anxious and excited at the same time!)
Im from brussels, belgium
actually Im still a little bit hesitating with ubc…you know all of those rumors about uoft !
placido240, if McGill had accepted me Id have gone there…but its especially because they let us take exams in french I think theyre all good so you cant be mistaking! maybe more UT/McGill :)

Hi placido240
First of all, its the program that decides which university is better than the other. From what I hear UofT is the without doubt the best among the three but incase of Life Sciences UofT and Mcgill they are pretty much at par. I got into all the three and I chose UofT simply because of better faculties and the best eco and math departments in the Canada. Medicine /life sciences are great at UofT too but I guess Mcgill has the slighter edge, and by slighter I totally mean slighter. I have a bunch of friends doing life sciences as well as commerce at Mcgill and UofT and both agree that though the Life sciences standard is more or less the same, the commerce at UofT is miles ahead of that at Mcgill.
Queens may be more academically sound at commerce than others in canada but it does suffer from a large number of handicaps such as location, lack of breadth of the course (the queens commerce solely focuses on commerce and doesn’t provide sufficient knowledge in other subjects unlike UofT)… I would suggest you go through the posts that are solely set up for this purpose, but I do need to add that with UofT one can never go wrong.

I’m at Victoria as well! Oh and I really don’t think examinations in french should be the deciding factor while choosing a university as noone can escape an english speaking environment and it will inevitably cause you problems in future. Life Sciences at UofT is amazing, from what I hear, and I’m sure you’ll love UofT especially because it’s in Downtown, Toronto (atleast that’s the reason I’m especially excited about joining UofT). UBC is great too and I got into it as well but I chose Toronto because of the city, superior programs and ofcourse the warmer weather.
My main concern is gonna be about leaving all my friends, my girlfriend and ofcourse the freakin’ cold weather… lol…

i got into life sciences - environment and energy… new college!!! very happy and excited

however i also got into environment and business at uwaterloo.

basically, im from the states and was only able to visit canada a couple times in my life. i love the city of toronto and definitely feel like there will always be things to do. like jade, i am a bit nervous about the rumors of uoft not caring for its students. also i am afraid of the rumors of uwaterloo that it is extremely boring.

i really dont know much about either college besides what you can find on its own site. so im asking if anyone can help me for any general information on each college, and also which program is better, life sciences- environment and energy (uoft) or environment and business (waterloo)

also personal opinions and why? which university should i choose!??!

My friends sister is at waterloo environment and business, and she loves it. The program is a little intense going back and forth between coop and school but the experience is perfect if your interested in going into business with an environmental background.

Waterloo and uoft are very different. Personally im not a huge fan of waterloo’s campus and the town itself doesnt appeal to me. But then again im going to uoft so im biased. Think of it this way, uoft “big city feel” while waterloo is a smaller community.

Accepted as a 3rd year transfer student from California (originally from Montreal). UTSG campus, New College, in Biological Anthropology. yay :)

Also, to those who are deciding between UofT and McGill-

I also got into McGill, and I did a visit there last week. While I love Montreal (much more than Toronto), the campus itself was dirty and in disrepair. Old athletic facilities, old dining halls, dirty lecture halls. Toronto was completely clean, and it looks like new construction projects are even starting up.

As far as the profs go, I’ve found that the ones at UofT have been amazing. I was on a tour there yesterday and today, and many stopped to ask where we were from, and spent around ten to twenty minutes answering our questions. I wasn’t able to speak to single professor at McGill- they were all busy with exams. As were the Toronto professors.

Obviously I’m biased, but McGill would be a lot of fun to go to, and I’m sure most would be able to make their time there well spent. I think a visit is definitely a must though, to both of these schools

hey! i’ve been accepted to Life Sciences as well as University College. anyone have any info on which res is the best between Sir Dans and Whitney?

Been accepted to the life sciences program at st. georges…one question tho…i have been seeing some real horror stories about U of T’s GPA scale and how hard it is to get a good GPA in the Life Sciences department…anyone know if this is true? lol

hey guys, I got into Track One Engineering in UofT Although I’m still a little unsure because Waterloo gave me a scholarship for chem eng… any advice? :)

As a current life sci student at UofT, I can say that horror stories are not true (I always smile whenever someone asks about this because I was like that too years ago). But you have to work hard to earn your As. There will be no second chances or professors waiting for you to do homework or hand your assignments in. You have to be very self-sufficient here, which is what I think many students have a hard time getting used to at first. Time management is everything.

I’ve never had my grades deflated. In fact, we have always had our marks curved up in first year. Average marks are always around a C, which is why many students are also shocked at first since many were top students in highschool. Just remember, that it is not impossible to get A’s. You just have to put in the time and effort!
