University of Toronto, Waterloo for psychology grad

Hi, Midwesterner here, and I would like to move to Canada for grad studies in Psychology and specializing in a more research sub field like Human Factors. I was looking at waterloo as a second option, but I like how Toronto is accessible by train from the U.S., and it seems the city’s public transit would be better. Does anyone know how strong Toronto or Waterloo are when it comes to research and how good either university is with connecting graduates to employers? Also am wondering about the social life of the two universities. Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

U of T is strong in research in all areas, including psychology, in which it is ranked top 10ish in the world. Waterloo is strong in math and CS, but not so much for life sciences such as psychology. There is a vibrant social life in the city of Toronto. Not so much at Waterloo. As a grad student at U of T, the social life will come from outside of the university. As a grad student, it will be up to you to connect yourself to employers.

U of T is one of the top 25 universities in the world. Wonderful research output. Waterloo is more tech/engineering/app development type stuff.

I agree with the comments above. McGill is also very strong in psychology.

@bouders thanks! Social life was something i expected in TO. I hadn’t heard of Waterloo until I researched Human Factors programs in Canada.

@DadTwoGirls thanks. I’ll check out McGill also.

@bouders I should clarify what I meant by connecting graduates to employers as I could research their alumni program. But since you’re a grad student there, does U of Toronto at least have a helpful career center putting together events like career fairs which help students connect with potential employers? Thanks.
