My D20 received a text message just a few minutes ago that she was accepted. This struck me as odd since I was expecting notification to come through regular mail based on past threads. You might want to let your kids know to keep an eye on their text messages.
Just got in over text. Still no clue what scholarships I got
@Highlander96 @BookGazette
Congrats! Any updates on your portal?
I just texted my D to tell her to check her texts
Accepted! By text too and no information about merit etc. My portal still looks the same so I’m assuming once they update that they’ll provide more information. Congrats to those accepted so far!
I was offered Freshman Academic Award 10k a year OOS (Idaho).
My Stats:
31 ACT
3.98 UW/4.34 W
Class Rank: 5/412
14 APs
Activities: Choir, XC/Track, CS Club
Awards: All-State Choir, Local Jazz Solo Award, AP National Scholar
The award was kind of underwhelming
D20 accepted via text. No merit info yet.
Congrats on the award. Did they also notified about the award through text?
I guess they’re pretty stingy with WUE. I wonder if they would award you the out of state tuition waiver for the first year if you’re trying to become a resident. They call this the Academic Commendation Scholarship
What major did you apply for?
I applied Electrical Engineering. I found my award through logging in the CIS Portal.
Nothing has changed on her portal. She only received the text.
I thought if you meet minimum gpa requirements everyone in a qualifying state gets WUE- it sounds like it is only offered to some?
Selection for WUE is “based on cumulative GPA and ACT/SAT scores“ and “a limited number of awards will be made”

The U weights pretty heavily to very high ACT/SAT scores, especially for OOS (for example a 36 ACT has been needed for OOS Presidential in recent years). Also they prefer to give some merit for the first year and then allow you to earn residency by staying over the summer, rather than offering WUE for all four years, after all the state wants to attract more residents. And the $10K award is probably better over the four years with residency for years 2-4 than paying the WUE supplement all the way through.
@BookGazette I understand your disappointment, the ACT scores are a much bigger deal in these auto merit awards than ECs or class rank. However, if you are interested in attending then you should look at the Engineering department specific scholarships, which can stack on top of the university award (some may require a separate application).
@Gregmacd The one year full tuition (followed by residency) is the next step up from the academic achievement award (which comes in $6K, $8K, $10K and $12K variants) so would have required higher scores (33 ACT?). Then you get to four year full OOS tuition at 34-35 ACT. You might be able to switch academic achievement to WUE if that is preferred (although total cost would likely be higher)
My D’s portal says she won’t have a decision until March 1st. This was likely due to the official transcript being sent after November 1st. We requested that it be sent electronically from Naviance, which is used by both her high school and the UU, but we later found out her school had to send it manually.
This is quite disappointing, because I think that knocks her out or consideration for any merit scholarships. We probably won’t qualify for financial aid, and we’re iffy on whether she’ll stay the summer to get residency.
Well, at least she got accepted to 4 other schools. Congrats to all who made it!
Just got an email with son’s acceptance. Pleasantly surprised to see he received the Non-Resident Academic Excellence Award of full tuition for 4 years as we were expecting the WUE scholarship instead. He had a 4.0 unweighted, 13 APs , 33 ACT and was homeschooled. While this is a fantastic award, I’m a little worried about the 3.6 gpa requirement especially given possible engineering major.
I have OOS twins, both accepted. My son 4.2 unweighted gpa 1500 SAT, tons of APs and ECs, received an email this morning with the Non resident academic excellence award. No mention of Honors college. Will this be a separate notification? I would be very surprised if he didn’t get into it. My son has stronger stats than my daughter, but I certainly expected her to get some merit too, with a unweightedd 3.9 1270 SAT very strong dancer, but no email yet.
Is there a major/program acceptance indication? I have tried looking through CIS, but I am having difficulty locating it. Congrats to all.
I logged into my son’s CIS, and it shows he was accepted pre biomedical engineering, but I can’t find anywhere that says anything about his scholarship. We know he got it based on the email, but it doesn’t seem to be in the portal at this point. Has anyone heard anything about the honors college?
In CIS, click Financial Aid (piggy bank logo) and then Scholarship Offer. My son’s offer was there. We are OOS, but I do not know if that matters.
It’s always fun when you start a thread and then are disappointed.
We were really hoping for the Academic Achievement scholarship for D20 which would have put the U on par with her favorite “reach” school, but she was offered the Academic Commendation scholarship (full OOS tuition x 1 year). I figured her 34 ACT was good enough but I’m guessing her 3.95UW GPA was the issue?!? Now we will be taking a trip out to Philly because Temple showed her some love with a 4 year full tuition scholarship. And of course now we have the long wait for the UCs…
@KBTDPT LOL! I went to Drexel in West Philly in the 1980’s, and it was a bit of a rough neighborhood. However, everyone then said that the Temple area was rougher. I’m not sure how times have changed, but be sure to check out the neighborhood. Also, back then, I believe Temple wasn’t ABET accredited for engineering. I think they are now, but something else to check out. Of course, checkout the Reading Market for a cheesesteak.
Our D is likely to go to UN Reno. It’s similar in size to SLC, and close to skiing. Also, everyone gets WUE if you have a 3.25 GPA, regardless of SAT scores. I think their application deadline is 4/7. Probably to pick up the CA students, who didn’t get what they want
