@Gregmacd- I hear you on Philly. I got in there for grad school, visited in Feb, and was like “no way, not this Cali girl!”. My daughter is a different person and she doesn’t mind the city environment…its just not easy to get to from Sacramento. We do have family there and my brother is in NYC so that helps. Sooo many kids from our school go to UNR…it has a lot going for it…just not for my daughter’s major (political science/public policy). Best of luck with this whole crazy process!
@KBTDPT Yes, Philly is not for everyone, but it is for some people. I really liked the city. (I can’t say the same about Drexel, but then again maybe times have changed). Great nightlife, a lot of history. A bit cold in the winter, and humid in the summer, but not too bad. If your D is comfortable there, it’s a great choice. (I’m beginning to realize that more than one school could be the right choice for my D)
I have twins, and one of them got an email this morning saying they got the Non-Resident Academic Excellence Scholarship. The other one didn’t get an email, but we just checked her portal and she too received the same scholarship, so for some reason not everyone was notified via email so it is worth checking the portal. I am still trying to figure out how you learn about the honors college or if no news means, you did not make it.
The Honors College invite should come separately. Two years ago we were told they offered about 1900 spots in the Honors College (about one third accept so they end up with ~15% of freshmen in Honors) so a little less than 20% of accepted students.
That means just over half of applicants above the 75th percentile scores in the freshman profile should receive an invite and certainly those with the higher tier merit scholarships will. With the new Honors dorm opening this summer, it is possible that even more offers could be made for 2020-21.
You’re telling me that your daughter received full tuition for 4 years with a 1270 SAT? @2020MomTwins
@bhsrunner I didn’t want to butt in, but that surprised me too. These awards are supposed to be strictly GPA/test score based…
That just doesn’t exactly add up. I had stats of 1430 SAT, 4.0 unweighted GPA, and 10 AP’s with all 4’s and 5’s. Only received 10k a year for OOS?
Check spam email for regular and honors acceptance
Yes, my D’s acceptance email went to spam. I just checked and her Honors acceptance did as well. Thanks for reminding people.
My son’s honors college acceptance and Academic Excellence Scholarship notices also went to spam (while the general acceptance email did not.) So, definitely check spam!
Son received text yesterday and portal says he is admitted but he has not received an email. We checked spam. Nothing. Anyone else? Also, I don’t see a piggy bank icon on portal.
Ugh, yes sorry it was a very disappointing portal glitch (my son’s award was on her portal - the email issue was part of the problem as well -and it was resolved when I called admissions). My daughter did not get the Academic Excellence full tuition, she did get merit, but not the full tuition like my son. Sorry for the mistake .
@2020MomTwins thank you for clarifying! We were all trying to figure that one out…disappointing for your daughter for sure but at least both admitted!
@cbdbcl we had to go through a different site to check for the piggybank icon…I googled “University of Utah” and “CIS” and was able to log on through that site and access the info there. I think its more of a back door entry. I hope that helps.
yeah something might have happened to us (I had a 31 ACT [1400 SAT eq.] and 3.98). I also had a ton of ECs and 9 APs already taken. I did however get honors admission.
I got waitlisted from the Honors College with a 4.00 GPA (UW), 1430 SAT, 10 AP classes, and strong (not mind-blowing) ECs. I was kind of surprised and was really looking forward to having Utah Honors as a front-running option, but without Honors, it doesn’t really make sense for me to attend Utah over a UC for example. Does anyone have any recommendations about a letter of continued interest or something?
Update for us… we heard from a person at Utah that Honor College decisions were sent out via email on Jan. 15, both acceptances and rejections. My son got neither and panicked that he somehow did not apply right. We called the Honors College directly and they were busy and took a message and we did not hear back. I called regular admissions and talked to a nice person who told us that he was admitted to the Honors College so I guess no one should read too much into anything in terms of getting or not getting emails from Utah.
I got full OOS tuition x 4 years and honor college. Very happy and grateful! You have to maintain 3.6 gpa to keep the scholarships though, so one bad semester could jeopardize your scholarship.
Did anyone get wue yet or has any information on when they’ll be notifying the wue recipients?
The grades are evaluated at the end of each year, not each semester, for scholarship renewal (see https://financialaid.utah.edu/types-of-aid/scholarships/freshman/freshman_terms_2020_21/nracademicexcellence2020_21.php).
You can also check out GPA percentiles by major (and course) here: https://www.obia.utah.edu/data/student-data/gpa-percentile/
In many majors 30-40% of students have a 3.6 GPA or above because Utah’s grading policy is quite favorable.
