University of Vermont or Middlebury??? Help please!!

I was lucky enough to be accepted into Middlebury College, as well as UVM. I will study environmental studies/sciences at either school. I was not offered any aid from Middlebury, and therefore would have trouble paying for the school (would have to take out pretty substantial loans, etc.). I wouldn’t have much trouble paying for UVM and the environmental department there may be better anyway?? I loved Midd but not sure it’s worth the money. Someone please help me I have like 2 days to make a decision

My son and I really like Middlebury. But after 40 years in your industry I suggest UVM. Get good grades and good internships, then aim for a grad school that will bring you on as an RA or TA. You will be debt free.

Get a classic undergrad diploma such as geology or civil engineering. At this moment there is a shortage of hydraulics and hydrology specialists.

Private message me if needed.

Congratulations. You have great choices. I think highly of the underrated UVM, but I honestly believe MIddlebury will open a lot more doors. Also, Middlebury has one of the best environmental studies programs in the country (It’s the oldest program in the country). Best of luck in making your decision.

I love Middlebury, but it is not worth the debt. I definitely wouldn’t do it. The environmental sciences don’t pay well enough to look at that amount of debt lightly. And you don’t want to limit what you do by the debt you have to pay off. It will be better to go to UVM and then follow your passion for a career. They have an entire school related to the environmental sciences.

Actually it depends on how much debt you’d have to take on.

Without knowing your precise financial situation, I’m not going to advise you either way. But if you have to give up Midd for the financials, it might console you to know that UVM is in a MUCH more vibrant and interesting area than Middlebury (in addition to its great reputation for environmental science). Best of luck with your decision, let us know which way you go!

If you didn’t get any aid from Midd, how much would you have to borrow, and how much would your parents be able to pay (if anything)?

If you, personally, would have to borrow more than around $40,000 then I would say pass and go to University of Vermont.

UVM has a tremendous environmental sciences program and I agree with ZZdecision2016 - it’s not a high paying area and I would be hesitant to take on too much debt.

I’d go to UVM if the price is better for sure. Save some $$ now that you can use for grad school or something else down the road. UVM is making some improvements including new freshman dorms and a new Stem center. Much more to do in UVM area too.

I agree with Julliet’s loan amount. Not more than $40,000 total would be reasonable. If you are a Vermont resident, though, UVM would probably be a great deal.

Graduating with little or no debt is a huge consideration these days, it allows for a lot more freedom post graduation. Do well in either and many doors will open up. Congratulations.

How much personal debt are we talking about ?
I agree Midd is worth * some * debt but within the federal limits.

@awelch8 what did you end up choosing?

I suggest lowering that loan ceiling to $23K (the aggregate loan limit for federal subsidized loans). Maybe go as high as $31K (the aggregate limit for subsidized + unsubsidized), if your parents are comfortable with the rest of your EFC.

According to Kiplinger’s, Middlebury’s average debt at graduation (for those students who borrow) is $17,975.
