University of Vermont

@thumper1 I’m assuming I’m paying around my efc, minus money my parents are helping with and from scholarships.

I am optimistic about my chances for an RA position given that I easily have the Presidential Scholarship.

Obviously I have a backup option in state.

Imho I’ll do what’s best for me. I don’t need other options pointed out, I was just wondering about financial aid. Thanks.

Well…in terms of UVM financial aid…just wait and see…and hope for the best. We live in a nearby state, and know more than several kids who got good scholarships and that was it. UVM did not make up the sizable difference between the instate and OOS costs to attend.

One kid really thought he could make it work…and ended up transferring after his first year there. He just couldn’t make financial ends meet.

You could get lucky…

Glad you have something else in the hopper.

EFC from what source? You can’t use the NPC (well, won’t be accurate) and you say you haven’t received the VT fin aid details. If you mean the FAFSA calculation, that’s not the college’s.

.

How is that “nothing”?

How much do you think you can earn over the summer? How much do you think you can earn during the school year?

What does having the Presidential Scholarship have to do with applying to be an RA? That’s a highly sought after position, for the exact reason you want it. There will be a lot of upperclassmen applying for those spots.

7,000 a year times four is 28K.

Just come to terms with needing a four year financing plan, not a one year plan. I won’t bore you with the stories I know of kids in my community who’ve come home after a year out of state because the “it’s only 7K” gap became impossible by sophomore year. And if they take a year off to work to amass a cash cushion- the loan they took to afford Freshman year kicks in and they need to start paying even though they don’t yet have a degree.

So big hug to you- this sounds challenging, just develop a four year plan, not a one year plan. And if becoming an RA doesn’t come to pass, make sure you know where those dollars are coming from ahead of time.

before you plan to become an RA, please check if it will reduce your financial aid. Many schools still expect you to pay your efc. Therefore if the benefit of an RA position is free room and board and you were receiving financial aid to cover this cost, that aid will now disappear. Also check with the school about your outside scholarships. At many schools they can not stack onto your existing financial aid award but will replace part of it. I don’t know about UVM but you should carefully check their financial aid policies because what you are planning will not reduce your efc but may result in the school cutting back your financial aid to take those things into account.
