Waiting to hear about honors, but unlikely to accept because of concerns about what happens if they want to change their major. We did love the school and campus. Maybe grad school?
It really varies. According to UW website:
In 2021, 631 of the 4,668 students on the waitlist were offered admission. In 2020, 2,160 of the 4,890 students on the waitlist were offered admission. So about 15% in 2021 but around 45% in 2020.
2020 probably wasnāt very representative. Things went off the rails that year and many students held off on attending due to COVID anomalies, uncertainties, and restrictions.
We have an OOS admit too. May I ask what the concerns are about change of major? Congrats and thanks!
Our son is one of those āsurprisedā in-state kids. It was stunning. He was also waitlisted.
I would have thought the freshman class larger than 7,000. Arenāt there 31 or 32 thousand undergrads? And usually the freshman class is the largest as some donāt make it through the freshman year? Or does UW admit a large number of transfers making their junior class the largest?
@Carina_M - thanks very much! I am sure it will all work out in the end, but itās hard to convince a HS senior of that when they get a series of disappointments. I am sure heāll be OK once heās on campus wherever he ends up deciding on.
@bellevuemom1 - agreed. We are realizing that I was pretty deluded putting faith in the admissions chances calculator. I am realizing how much more competitive UW is than I was expecting!
If you are not directly admitted to your major (for the programs that have direct admission) you need to think hard about how competitive and challenging standard admission is after sophomore year
For example, Foster Business school statistics after sophomore year:
3.86 GPA for Pre-Application courses,
3.77 overall GPA,
4 out of 5 on your WSA (writing test). Acceptance rate is only 30-50%.
Classes are graded on a curve so you have to crush weed-out classes like calculus, accounting, economics, and statistics that are part of the pre-application process.
Itās not just show up and put in the work, itās a lot of pressure which changes your college experience for the first 2 years.
Son graduating from Foster this year was not direct admit and says he would not do it again. Heās graduating magna cum laude so he battled through it but the social and emotional cost was big.
Hopefully this doesnāt sound too over the top - just trying to provide honest feedback.
Thank you for the honest feedback. That is exactly my D22ās concern and it is helpful to know her worry is not unfounded.
DS22 OOS. Applied math. Waitlisted
S22 OOS. Accepted. Pre-sciences. Most rigorous courseload possible. 5s on AP exams. National Merit Commended Student. 35 ACT/36 superscore although I guess it wasnāt used at UW.
D22 accepted. Direct admit to Foster. OOS. P&G Scholarship.
UW is a top contender, so planning to attend the admitted student day! Hopefully weāll gain a better understanding of the opportunities available and a general sense of overall vibe at Foster.
And while my daughter is excited to revisit the campus, she is just as excited, if not slightly more, to revisit the Museum of Pop Culture. Sheās already insisted that we set aside an entire day for it. (Supposedly the few hours we had allotted the last time werenāt nearly enough.)
Same with daughter
Thank you for your input. Is there a similar dynamic for majors that arenāt direct admit? My daughter is looking to major in political science.
Also, any experience with the honors program?
In state, admitted to CSā¦.1590 SAT, 4.0, 11 APs, NMF, strong ECs, 2 sports, 2 bands, job. His close friend group though who are all very similar did not all get their major and 1 got straight rejected.
Itās been a tough admission cycle for us with 2 rejections so far and waiting on CA schools now; needed this win for sure and also feel terrible for friends who didnāt get it.
Does anyone know if everyone who wants to go to Admitted Student Preview Day on March 26 is able to register or are there a limited number of spots? S22 is OOS and is planning to make travel arrangements, but weāre hesisitant since registration hasnāt officially open yet. From the info provided on the website, sounds like its a whole day of various activities and will be able to accommodate a massive number of visitors but didnāt know for sure.
Congrats to everyone who were admitted! Does anyone know if the scholarships that have been offered with admission are based on financial need?
