I didn’t see any mention of capacity constraints on the website. But if there’s to be a cap, I would think they’d make that prominent when they open up registration…which hopefully will be soon.
They are not. I believe they are based on merit.
How about for in-state students, any merit-based scholarship opportunities? Is so, when to announce?
It hadn’t occurred to me that there might be a cap to registration for the Admitted Students preview day. I just booked our flight tickets. S22 is super excited. I’ve never been to Seattle before and he only had about an hour on campus where his XC running team did a practice run before a big regional meet outside the city.
He was admitted as pre-humanities because his requested major was Japanese Language and Culture. I guess that is how they admit for that major.
I’ve heard a lot of rumors about it being difficult to get the classes students want/need, but I’m assuming that’s CS/Engineering/Foster classes and not your standard humanities or Japanese culture classes?
This is the best site to understand the 3 types of Majors: Open, Minimum Requirements, and Capacity Constrained. You can sort on each category to learn more about admissions requirements and paths.
I’ve already booked our flights and hotel as well. (My daughter keeps telling me that I need to manifest the outcome that I want…so just following her advice. )
We visited UW last summer during a mother-daughter road trip. We were able to go on a guided campus tour, but weren’t able to enter any of the buildings. It’s a beautiful campus. And for my daughter, who wants to attend a large urban university, UW offers the best of both worlds…a true campus feel with easy access to urban sights and activities.
I understand the process - I’m wondering if it is as cutthroat for students pursuing majors that aren’t direct admit.
yes, it is
hey, i remember you from a thread awhile back! congrats to your son, uw is huge! did he end up applying to oxy?
The Capacity Constrained majors are all very competitive.
The minimum requirements are almost irrelevant because the actual accepted averages are much higher.
I am curious. Considering the outcome for business schools are similar (financial firms/banks and consulting companies), did going to Foster and all this extra effort pay off in the end?
That’s helpful feedback. I have a daughter who got in pre to UW but has direct admits at other comparable schools. I am inclined to steer her away from essentially starting the audition all over again in a few months.
There was a solid payoff. He accepted a role midway thru senior year with a Fortune 50 employer in their supply chain operations leadership development program. He had multiple offers in multiple industries.
To be clear, I am not saying that taking on the challenge of standard admission is not worth it. Rather, my advice is to be realistic that it is a difficult path with 50% or less acceptance rate. Foster has excellent outcomes.
Thank you for the honest feedback! We were on the fence with our child. You have made it easy us (and, I’m sure, for many parents) to decide. The last two years with the pandemic and the crazy admissions cycle this year have been stressful enough on the children, and it is insanity to put them under this kind of pressure for the next two years just to ensure their major.
UW is an amazing school. It was one of my final schools that I was deciding between and although I decided to go elsewhere, I know that I still would’ve had an amazing time had I gone to UW. For anyone who is uncertain about the school or cannot decide whether or not to go, the school is amazing. It has a beautiful campus, big sports/spirit, and is an academic school. However, if you are someone that wants a smaller school where you are guaranteed to get your classes, I would recommend that you look elsewhere, as UW is a massive school and I have heard many people experiencing difficulty getting into their desired classes.
According to Princeton Review 7775 offered waitlist, 39% of those took a spot on the waitlist and 79% of those that took a spot in the waitlist were offered admission.
From UW’s website, CDS In 2021-22:
10,239 offered a spot on waitlist
4,565 accepted
775 admitted from the waitlist
S22 in state, accepted. 3.96 GPA, 4 AP and one College in the HS class, only extracurricular was jazz band, but he’s won a lot of awards. I wondered if being accepted into the music program last month may have helped. I don’t know how much that is coordinated with the applications office, if at all.
I believe that it is preliminary though because on their website they say that the 2021-2021 is preliminary data where as the other years don’t have that
My daughter applied for pre-nursing and was waitlisted. Here are her stats if it’s helpful:
OOS (Vermont)
3.81 GPA UW, 1 AP class junior yr
All senior yr class dual-enrollment at community college, including some nursing pre-reqs (Anatomy & Physiology, Psych, etc.)
Decent but not stellar ECs
About 95% certain she’s not going to join the waitlist, since she’s gotten a couple of acceptances with merit awards at other schools that rank as high or higher on her list. Good luck to everyone!
