University of Washington Seattle - Fall 2022 Admission

Is UW known for not offering any grants or scholarships to OOS students? My daughter was accepted but offered no aid. She has other options but UW is absolutely her first choice. We were thinking about calling or writing an email to see if they would reconsider…

I read somewhere that about half of OOS accepted are offered a P&G scholarship. Our daughter received 3K and I think the range this year was 3-7.2K. Scholarships at UW are low compared to other schools, at least all the schools our D20 and D22 applied.

Got it. Thank you.

Wow, you made that decision in March? I am not even sure how we will decide among all the good choices by May 1.

Would you be willing to explain the colleges that you turned down and if willing, the whys?

@UWGradfromLongAgo I can try. For her, the process probably started a couple years ago visiting several schools with her older sister, so she’s probably seen more campus’ then most kids.

Her first decision was climate. That was NW, NE, and upper MW. So those were the 3 visit tours we did last year. She did not even apply to any of the great CA or southwest schools she had previously seen.

I think she would have only applied to 3 or 4 schools if we did not press her to do more. So she did 6 and had those options. All were OOS for us and no huge scholarship offers so all generally expensive and therefore cost not really a deciding factor in the end.

The first school she asked to visit was UW and then a family vacation to the Oregon coast late last summer I think solidified the NW for her. Once we attended UO Duck Days and they showered her with love, UW Madison, UM, UCONN, and American were eliminated. That same evening is when she got the UW acceptance with 3K P&G and after a super fun and exciting day on the UO campus she did not seem very excited about it.

But I guess attending the UW admitted student day had an impact. She saw herself fitting in at either UO or UW but I think she decided UW was the better rated academic school and Seattle as a big city would offer more opportunities down the road. Or it was simply her top choice all along and the final visit reaffirmed it.

Every kid is different. Our older daughter is thriving at a small private college. They even attended different high schools, that one the smaller private college prep school and D22 the large public HS but each environment and culture was best for them.

For anyone, I’d highly recommend a final visit to their top 2 or 3 if possible. It can make a difference. I was convinced our older was going to Pepperdine until another admitted student day visit won out. Saved me 100K in the long run too. lol

My daughter still does not have a financial aid decision showing up in her portal. Has everyone else received a decision at this point? Thanks for any information that you might have on this.

Thanks for walking us through your daughter’s experience. It felt very reassuring to me. Over the next couple of weeks, my son will be sifting through his options and visiting a handful of campuses for the very first time, which I think is what will ultimately help him make his final decision.

Good luck to everyone who is still helping their child figure this out, and congratulations to those who’ve made the decision!

D22 still considering her options but I think UW is off the table. She had a Zoom call with a professor and learned that a center focusing on nonprofits was being phased out and the professor left in the dark about its replacement. That’s the area of public policy my daughter most wants to pursue. That, combined with continued information about the vibe is just leaving her less and less interested. The school offers gray opportunities and I wish everyone the best!

I’m glad she was able to connect with a professor and get this information to help her make her decision. My son hasn’t begun connecting with schools yet–he hasn’t gotten home from school until 7 any night this week; but this weekend and the next two weeks will be a whirlwind of activity and decision making. Best of luck to your daughter.

Thank you — you too! Where is he considering? We have felt that UO love! It’s very powerful!

Hhmm, can you elaborate on the “vibe” you are talking about? Also what you mean by “gray opportunities?”

Well, his decision got whittled down to Stanford yesterday. All the plans we made to tour other schools have been cancelled. Whew. Today he’s letting the other colleges know.

I hope you let us know where your daughter decides to go so we can celebrate with you!

Sorry great opportunities!

We have been left with the impression that it is a bit cold and impersonal. Several comments upthread. When we were on our campus tour, my daughter asked about whether classes were usually lectures/note taking or discussion. The guide asked why people would want a discussion! It’s why my daughter felt like honors was a way to counteract this, but the latest news about the scrapping of a research center that she cared about really made her think it was not her place. They do have to winnow the choices.

Oh wow ! Congratulations! Airfares so expensive now — you caught a break! I will update!

anyone hear back for appeals?

I apologize if it was already posted, but are numbers out for percent accepted in-state engineering? (And in-state CS?)

No , we appealed on March 8th.

We appealed on march 16th,still awaiting

Okay, new news to DS: He attended the Applied Mathematics virtual discussion today. He found out that the acceptance rate for the Applied Mathematics major is between 15-25% (15% being the most recent. A few years ago it was 50%) after the first year. Average GPA of hs students who are considering the major is 3.9.

I think this has scared him off!:grimacing:

Appeal decision for cs came out today for me. Rejected :frowning:
