University of Washington Seattle - Fall 2022 Admission

Hi
I just attended UW’s admitted students presentation : Ask an Admissions Counselor. One of the counselors said, word by word, “So for all 180 majors or whatever it is at UDUB, you’ll have an opportunity to study it, with the exception of Computer Science and Computer Engineering.” For more context, the counselor was talking about students admitted as “Pre-major” to UDUB, myself included. Does this mean that the Computer Science and Computer Engineering department no longer admits non direct admit to major students this year? Does this mean that I won’t have a chance to pursue CS at UDUB?

I know that some people got into CS from pre-major last year.

Thank you

We were told at the Admitted Students event that only 20% of in-state students get accepted into CS and 2% of out-of-state. They also said if you didn’t get a direct admit into CS your chances are slim to none on getting in.
At one of the breakout sessions a student talked about how he was admitted into pre-science instead of CS. He applied three times to get into CS, rejected each time. He ended up majoring in math and will be graduating with a job lined up as a Software Engineer at Amazon or Google. He told us he took some computer science classes and didn’t give up hope on becoming a software engineer.
It seems like quite a few pre-science students end up in a major they had never thought of entering before. They seemed happy with their path.

I hope this helps!

Every UW presentation I have attended since last year indicated that the only way into CS is by direct admit.

Thank you !!
At least we still have the chance to pursue the comp sci major , but actually i start to find out that there are many other major related to computer science outlook …

yes, thank you !

Hi
Have you decide to go to UW?
More informations regarding major admission restrictions and now start to doubt again :pensive:

My D22 is going to commit to UW (over UC Davis) but is a microbiology major- which is not as restricted. She loved the campus and the vibe and mostly- loves the classes and the research opportunities.

Did she admitted to direct major or as a pre-sciences ?

Hi
Have you make any decision?

She was admitted pre-sciences but microbiology is not a hard major to get into.

Has anyone on the waitlist received a decision? Or does anyone know when they might?

My son is also waitlisted and no word. However, he wrote an appeal and promptly received a rejection 5 days later:

On behalf of the Committee on Admissions and Academic Standards, I am sorry to inform you that your appeal was not approved. We are unable to offer you admission to the Seattle campus of the University of Washington at this time. You were invited to join the freshman waitlist. If you have already responded to our invitation to be placed on our waitlist, we will return your name to the list. If you have not responded to the invitation, but wish to join the waitlist, please complete the online form as soon as possible.

We greatly appreciate your interest in the University of Washington and thank you for the time and effort you put into your application and appeal. We wish you all the best as you continue your education.

humbling experience indeed. one cannot help benchmark against few candidates who were offered a spot. Each student circumstances, rigor, hardship, opportunities are crafted by hard work, some better luck than others, timing, and/or a strong supporting cast.

Good luck! I think we will move on…if you are not wanted and your circumstances were remarkably extenuating with a well kept rigor etc…they simply have stronger candidates.

May will be an interesting month!

My daughter did too!

awesome! maybe they are connecting on that roommate app

Which app is that? She just committed yesterday. Still catching up!

Same thing happened with my son, waitlisted and he appealed and got a denied 4 days later. It seems those that did not get in that have appealed and are still waiting. I am not sure what is worse, being waitlisted and denied appeal or being denied and appeal and still waiting. Either way, my son is also over it. Frustrating! Maybe they should just not have an appeal process. He followed the direction as written.

It is crushing, consuming, draining and demotivating esp when an admissions counselor reminded my son that an appeal success is less than 1% and that rarely are decisions reversed.

Is your son on any waitlists? What are his plan b, c, d?

Hang in there! There is a college community for every student learner. Sometimes the path requires some pivoting or repivoting to figure it out.
Best of luck in the next 4-8 weeks!

He has moved on, excited to attend Chapman University in Computer Science. They have demonstrated amazing interest in my son. Thank you for the response.
