OLYMPIA - The University of Washington, one of the nation's premier colleges for drawing federal research grants, also ranks among the elite corps of universities with endowments of more than $1 billion.

The Seattle-based college, with campuses in Tacoma and Bothell, ranks No. 33 on a national list, with endowments topping $1.3 billion. Just a decade ago, that was under $300 million.

The university is one of 14 public colleges on the list, ranking just behind the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The UW has a long tradition of tapping alumni and other benefactors and was one of the earlier public universities to launch such a well-oiled fundraising effort, said Connie Kravas, vice president for development.

The region has a number of wealthy individuals, including Microsoft co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen, who have been generous to the university, helping to finance buildings, distinguished professorships and lectureships and providing financial help to promising students.

Gates' father, philanthropist and attorney Bill Gates Sr., is a regent of the university and is overseeing a new fundraising drive called Campaign UW: Creating Futures. The goal is $2 billion, some to go into permanent endowments and some to be spent in full on buildings and other purposes.

The university's consolidated endowment fund represents hundreds of individual endowments, many given by proud alumni for use by particular departments, Kravas said.

"We have an extraordinarily strong relationship with the community - giving is part of the culture of the business community here, part of the social and cultural fiber," Kravas said. "People who live here are so proud of their higher education institutions. We've had almost 70,000 individual donors and we're one of the first publics to set a goal of $2 billion."

The various endowment funds are spent as directed by the donors, with annual disbursements averaging between 4 and 6 percent of the entire amount. The UW regents, in consultation with investment experts, manage the money for long-term growth.

Emerald, thanks fo rthis. My daughter's boyfriend has U of Washington at the top of his list and will enjoy reading this.

I think Wash U would be a pretty cool school to go to...but I doubt I could ever get in...

Washington University is in St Louis Missouri
what is even more confusing is there is also George Washington University which is in DC

I would say something snarky about the presidents salary and the hundreds of thousands of dollars that the regents spent to remodel his house- but he is spending a lot of time in Olympia to get more funding for higher ed- too bad our city superintendent doesnt have that kind of stamina.

I got into UW from out of state this year and received nothing but loans for the first year.

Some refer to U of Mary Washington as U-Dub too. Go figure.

my daughter applied to three instate public schools ( Evergreen/WWU/CWU- that were good bets for her) one gave her a small scholarship, the others only loans.
