I am from Portugal and was recently accepted into the NU Scholars Program. I am planning on attending the welcome event. My question is if it's worth for my parents to come along. The flight isn't cheap and the trip takes time, so they were wondering if most students go with their parent/if the U prefers if the parents go.

Anyone who has gone/is planning on going have any thoughts/advice?

I think that it will be fine if you go without your parents, and I’ve heard that for a lot of visit days like this prospective students go alone. So, really, it should be up to your parents comfort level. See you there!

I was at the scholars weekend last year. While a lot of students parents come and they provide a lot of really excellent programming for parents about Northeastern, I wouldn’t say it’s absolutely necessary. It definitely would not be a waste for them to come, though.

Did anybody else get an email telling them that there was not enough student hosts and that they had to stay at the Westin? My son is bummed. He really wanted to stay in the dorm with a current student. Oh well.

In the past they have had university scholars and honors students hosting. This year, with 2 cohorts of university scholars, they are only having the scholars host. Apparently there are more potential students this year than they expected!

This happened last year as well and the people in the hotel had a great time. There were a lot of them and they all met up and hung out together on Sunday night. I’m a current scholar and a lot of us wanted to host but obviously not everyone signed up to(be it personal reasons, lack of space, roommate that wasn’t comfortable with it, etc) The rooms are a good size, but there are only so many people we can fit, and I know a lot of scholars wanted to host two(or three!) prospective students. Your son shouldn’t feel bummed! My favorite part of scholars weekend was during the day, anyhow- I hope he’ll feel the same. Good luck to him!

Great Scholars weekend - the university certainly went all out and hosted a very nice event. Of the scholars that attended, did the weekend push you in either direction toward or away from Northeastern?

I was at Northeastern for the Scholars weekend and I really, really liked it. It’s definitely in the top 2, but I’m waiting for my last decisions to come in before I send any deposits anywhere.

The weekend was really put together well. I was impressed with how they create a community of scholars, and all the opportunities the scholars will have. Incredibly, daughter has better financial options from one higher ranked school, and also obviously acceptances from other higher ranked schools. But if I could choose, I would choose NEU, due to the support and opportunities they give the scholars. Daughter still needs to make the choice in the next couple of days.

Positives for NEU :
Scholars support
scholarship money
CO-OP’s
Boston (City Center, but defined campus)
International Focus of Business Program
Recent Increasing Ranking

I’m really impressed by some of the things that the scholars have achieved, as well. This past weekend I helped out with the first Northeastern Splash, which a group of University Scholars organized. It is an event where high school students come for a day of classes taught by Northeastern students. This was their first event, and they had 125 high schoolers turn out for it! There is also the Science Squad, a group of University Scholars that do different experiments and teach science to high school students.

It’s a fairly new program, but I’m already impressed by the results. Dr. Iacono, who’s in charge of the program, is also really great and supportive. I think the program is really great for nurturing already impressive students.
