University Search - Graduate School for Artists

I’m currently enrolled in undergraduate school and am looking ahead to graduate school. I have an Art major and History minor, though that may change during the course of my remaining years. I’m looking for a graduate school that’s great for artists, and I want to major in something more specific (graphic design, media, advertising design) at that university. So far, I’ve been recommended to go to: Pratt Institute, SAIC, The New School, and Columbia. Pratt has expressed interest in me a while back, as well as SAIC, but I’m not sure. Any suggestions? Thank you very much!

You don’t really “major” in graduate school. You go to a specific program to study a specific thing, and you have to choose what that specific thing is before you apply. Applying for graphic design MFA programs would be very different from applying for MA programs in media.

If you are an art major and currently in school, ask your art professors what are the best programs in the field(s) in which you are interested.

Thank you for your information.

top graduate programs in the Country are #1 Yale, #2 VCUARTS, #2 UCLA, #3 RISD.
I would start there. Personal favorite is VCUARTS , great art community Richmond VA.

Best for what, though? If you want to do graphic design, it would seem that the top-ranked programs are RISD, Yale, Maryland Institute College of Art, Cranbook, CalArts, CMU and VCU. For photography, it’s Yale, Art Institute of Chicago, UCLA, RIT, SVA, and University of New Mexico.

I mean, if you go to one of the top places - Yale, VCU, CalAarts, UCLA - you’ll probably be fine no matter what kind of art you do, because they’re good in a lot of different areas. But there are probably also some places that are good in some fields but not as good (or don’t even have a program in) others.

VCUARTS also runs the famous Brandcenter , graduates are highly valued in graphic design, advertising community.

Interesting, thank you for your input! I’ll certainly look into VCUARTS.
