Hello, I was wondering if the merchant marine academy was actually easier to get into than the Naval Academy, being that it is not as well known. Does anyone know what the actual statistics are? Thanks

You can research the figures on the net, you may have to go to various sources … but in round numbers USNA enrolls between 5-10% of those who apply and the USMMA enrolls between 15-20% of it’s applicants (which are far fewer than the USNA).

Unless you are from NY, NJ, MD or VA, due to location and heavy Navy influence, and assuming you are a stellar student, both are doable. Check with your local Member of Congress’ office and talk to their person who works on nominations to get a feel for your local competititveness. That said, visit both. Depending on your personal preferences, go for whichever you REALLY, really want to go to, knowing that the next 4 years will be the toughest in your life.

Roger that guys, thanks for the advice.

The stats for the current class of 2015, as told to the plebe parents at check-in on 7/7/11 was ~7400 applicants for 292 appointments.

With all due respect to the Admissions Office, they count every inquiry as an application. Their numbers are suspect. If you asked how many had completed applications - either with or without nominations, the numbers would be MUCH less. Assuming every Member of Congress’ nominations and applications to the max, you are talking just over 1,000 REAL applications.

Not sure how you came up with your “1,000” number, but if each MOC filled their nominations they would have in excess of 5,000, as each MOC is allowed to nominate 10 candidates.

Agree with the 10 nominations, which is what we were told by the interview committee. Also, my son’s admission letter stated that 2914 individuals were nominated for USMMA. In any event, service academies are tough to get into period!

That sounds like a more reasonable number, 2914 nominations and 292 appointments = 10 percent actually admitted and showing up. Very few Members of Congress use 10 nominations and I know many nominated kids who wanted to go to USNA. I wonder how many were admitted and declined?
Needless to say, Congratulations to those who made it and even more to the less than 200 who are likely to graduate.

As a Kings Point Graduate I can tell you honestly that it doesnt matter about getting in-It matters about staying in and graduating. Dont pick a school based on which is easier to get into. Pick a school because you want to learn about Marine Engineering or Marine Transportation. If you attend KP and dont enjoy the academics, then I can assure you that you will have a long four years. If you enjoy the academics then it will still be a long four years but at least tolerable ! Heave Ho, my lad !
Best of luck
