Being accepted into USMMA by academics?

Is it necessary to be in the top 40% of your class to be accepted into USMMA? I have a current high school GPA of 3.0 but i am not in the top 40%. But i do have a college GPA of 3.5 with 12 hours of credit. Do i stand a chance of being accepted into the academy?

I participate in extracurricular activities like band, souts, and ROTC and i have advanced highly in them and won many awards, would that help or would the academics still keep me out of the academy?

Your GPA and class rank does seem a bit low, but if you are a senior now you have this year to bring it up some. Also, it depends on what type of classes you take, especially math. With that said I would encourage you to send in an application to the school. There may be offsetting factors (like your SAT/ACT scores). Good Luck and work hard this year!

My Son for senior year took 5 cources per semester instead of only 2 he needed to graduate. Those included AP calculus, Spanish, Band and NJROTC for the whole year, English, & Honors Oceanography each semester. He ended up with a 4.3 gpa and a 1250 SAT. He mentioned that so far KP Academic year isn't as bad as his HS Senior year (we'll see what he says at Halloween).
So my advice is to not slack off, take the extra math and if you haven't hit 1250 SAT take it over and over again. ALso don't forget that most Members of congress close the applications process in October, so don't wait. Also, KP accepts applicants up to age 23 or 24 so it's not a one shot deal. Work hard and be ready.
KP is a great place from a parents view.

Glenn66 you have asked the same questions before. Not every new plebe was the “top in their class”. Your best bet is to contact the academy, and sit down with someone in the admissions office. If you are attending college (junior college, state school or university) remember to pack in the math and science. Keep trying do not give up. There are midshipmen that have applied several times before being accepted. Watch the movie "Annapolis".

Another route is to self-prep at a school where the academies send their prep students. One such school is the New Mexico Military Institute NMMI Prep Program Homepage in Roswell, New Mexico. This program is not easy. Also try Northwestern Prep Northwestern Preparatory School in Southern California. These programs have great track records for helping the “less than perfect” students get into academies. Call them!

Glen66,
Like with all competitive schools, the hgher the rank and the better the grades will help you to get it. But, all school gives some students a chance. I wouldn't ride on this fact if I were you, but almost all schools are willing to take students who may have a little bit lower scores because they see potential in that student. Speaking from experience, my bf got into KP with scores that weren't stellar. I think sports deinitely helps as well, as with a lot of colleges. Hope this helps. =)
