So, I want to major in engineering in college (quite possibly Michigan). Michigan doesn't require any english courses or social studies courses (for engineering majors), I think.

I've decided to take english lang, world history, and chem next year (all AP, tell me if this is too much). My question is, would a college consider my application differently if I scored badly on unrelated courses, such as the english language and world history exams? What if I didn't take the exams at all?

Lots of people take the classes but don’t take the exams. A fair number of people take the exams without ever taking a class labeled AP. It really is up to you.

You don’t even have to submit your exam scores in your application. Colleges want to see you take on a rigorous course load and get good grades.

Search the websites of the colleges and universities that you are interested in for “Credit by Exam” and you should find links to the scores needed on AP, CLEP, DSST, IB and other exams. If CLEP exams are acceptable, and your AP score isn’t quite high enough, try the CLEP exam. They are shorter, and can be scheduled at any time during the year at a lot of different locations.

You can’t get the information that you want in this thread. It depends on the teacher. Some teachers teach an AP class to a 5. Those classes can be very difficult. Some teachers teach at the pace that the students can handle and don’t care what scores students get on the AP. Those are less stressful.

Here’s what I would do. Definitely take AP Chem.

I would talk to people who have taken or are taking those other AP classes at your school. Ask them to tell you how much more work the AP class over the honors class. Some examples, at our school
AP Calculus AB 1.0 (some even say that it’s easier than honors precalc)
AP Calculus BC 1.5 (about 50% more work than honors precalc)
AP US 2.0
AP Euro 2.0
AP Bio 3.0 (this is just brutal!)
AP Physics B 1.5
AP Chem 1.5

etc.

Then you can determine if it’s too much work to do the AP english and history. Don’t forget to leave time for college applications.

I’m a sophomore so…not quite applying to college yet :)

The thing with my school is that there are only three honors courses: biology, 9th grade english and 10th grade english. Too late for me to take any of those.

From what I’ve heard, the AP Chem teacher doesn’t quite teach. Everything is practically self-directed including the labs. AP World is a lot of in-class essay writing. AP Lang is reading and more reading. So far, my schedule would be looking like this next year.

AP Chem
AP English Lang
AP World History
Precalc
French (level 3)

So, it seems reasonable but I’m iffy on the AP Chem class. U of M gives credit to 4’s and 5’s.
