****UNOFFICIAL Class of 2015 National Merit Finalist Thread****

nothing in my KY mailbox today

Homeschooler in FL - It is here! So relieved to have this wait over with.

Congratulations to all others receiving theirs today!

Got mine from my school in CT today!

One of the schools my son applied to also said they would not stack scholarships. At least that is what they said last Spring after we visited the campus. Last month after a very successful audition they said they would be willing to ignore the policy about not stacking scholarships and grant him a music scholarship on top of the National Merit scholarship. I am learning that there is always room to negotiate. :bz

Whoops, spoke too soon. DS was just called in…finalist in Nebraska!

So…nothing in the mail…not a word from school…and on a diet! :frowning: @goaskdad could you please have a samoa for me? My favorite…

@albert69 - yes, that was for you! Sorry…haven’t spent enough time here to figure out the tag/linky thing. You will love WSU! The AE program is very, very strong and there are lots of opportunities for internships, etc. The campus life is robust. I think it is a fabulous school that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves on a national level.

Crickets in PA, and I guess that’s karma for being on the front end when the actual cuts came out.

If my son gets a letter from NMSC this week, should I panic or be excited? I just went to the mailbox, and when I saw one letter that looked on first glance like it could be from NM, my heart skipped a beat then I got excited then it was just junk mail anyway. I really think anything from NMSC from here on out will be good news, but still……

@DiWantsToTravel That sounds great! I just hope I can keep the GPA requirement for the scholarship (3.5). Are there a lot of tornadoes there (sorry, never been to Kansas, so my only impressions so far are from things like the Wizard of Oz.) I am looking forward to visiting. It is a commuter school, right?

@Barfly I would say rejoice. By now you’d have heard if your S didn’t make it.

That’s what I’m thinking, and he has no Cs or Bs so he should be safe, but after all this time, I can’t go to the mailbox without heart palpitations.

Easy for you to say @albert69! (Trying not to panic) It makes perfect sense from a “no news is good news” perspective, but when you stop to consider that lost mailing possibility, things can go south quickly.

Stl high schools were notified last Monday, letters sent out beginning yesterday (per NMSC). Still waiting. . .

@albert69 there is always a risk of tornadoes in the Midwest, but weather is a risk anywhere. I lived in KS most of my life and only peripherally experienced a tornado. WSU has a reputation as a commuter school but there is great on campus housing and student activities. The Greek system is good and very inclusive if you are interested in that. Get in involved in the Student Activities Council and an engineering club and before you know it you will be a Senior Honor Man!

Son got finalist. Principal told him today :). We are in central Florida.

@DiWantsToTravel I am planning to join the rocketry club they have there, not sure what else yet. Not really interested in Greek stuff, but that’s good to know. What do you mean by “Senior Honor Man?” They have honors programs, but I doubt I will do them because it adds too many classes for me to realistically carry and keep a high GPA and still graduate in 4 years.

@Barfly I can relate to what you’re saying - I was on my way to the dentist yesterday & picked-up the mail on the way out. I just threw it in the car and didn’t look at it at first. At the first red light, I browsed through the stack & saw a letter that had initially been sent to the wrong address & it had one of those little tags showing that it was resent - for a moment, my heart was in my throat!!! Luckily it wasn’t what I feared it might have been, but still… I won’t let my guard down until I hear from S’s school or get the letter from NMSC!

STILL nothing in PA. Wow.

Had to step away from the thread & the Girl Scout Cookies for a while, but now I’m back. Congratulations to yet MORE NMFs on the thread!!

@PAMom21, thanks for updating our list & I like the way you’ve arranged it. Here - have a Samoa Girl Scout Cookie (or 5) for @anniechris!

Everyone can feel free to “copy/paste/add” using the latest list when you get your news. (Just plz make a good-faith effort to find the latest list.)

@albert69, I’m with @DiWantsToTravel on the tornado thing. I’ve lived in KS my entire life & only been on the periphery of a few tornadoes in 50 years. I wouldn’t let the tornadoes hold you back  However, given the current state of education funding in KS, I do suggest you & your parent(s) sit down with your Admissions Counselor at WSU when you visit and get your National Merit Scholarship offer IN WRITING - and confirm whether or not your offer is subject-to-change, based on funding. It breaks my heart to even type those words, because education funding is an issue particularly close to my heart. But forewarned is forearmed - and the same advice applies to any of us, certainly to my DS. ANY student who accepts a scholarship offer, National Merit of whatever, should get everything in writing and be very clear on the terms of the scholarship + renewal requirements + potential changes based on available funding.

I hope you do come to KS if you find WSU to be a good fit. I’ve never been to WSU, but I’ve heard very good things about it - espc its ties to the business community/internships/“Real-World” focus. I think WSU students have many opportunities that other state institutions do not provide (as well).

I don’t like the Peanut Butter Patties. Does anybody want a box? I’ll leave it on the thread - just take it.
