I’m going to have an aneurism if I don’t hear something today. Has anyone tried calling NMSC?
@3boystogo we hear from UF tomorrow but I’m lobbying for UM. Close to home and I think S will do well at the smaller school. Big brother is at UF and is recruiting hard. Would love to have NMF letter in hand and know that UM is covered.
I thought that good SAT’s would get my son through to finalist status, but we have heard nothing. #gettingdepressed
@Cshecmia Yes, a couple people have tried. They won’t release information yet.
Does anyone know if those who did not make Finalist status have already been informed?
@stimama They were sent letters already and they were a couple people on here that got them a couple weeks ago. If you haven’t heard by now, you should be good. And welcome to CC!
My son was advised by his principal this morning that he is a Finalist! I’m so relieved. I’ll keep checking in and keep my fingers crossed for those of you waiting!
@anniechris Congratulations! What state are you in? Does your son plan to use a NMF scholarship?
So strange to me that different schools play different games with regard to when they tell the kids. For those of you with kids at schools where they tell 'em right away (even by FB or email or text), consider yourselves lucky. I had to resort to a thread on CC to find out about my D’s NMSF status last fall…I knew before she did, thanks to some kid who had the national list (given to him by his GC/Principal) and was taking requests.
BTW, I will reiterate that it seems that only the first batch of letters (school or homeschool) have arrived so far. The letters that NMC reports were sent to student homes this week does not seem to have arrived (please correct me if I’m wrong).
We received the email from the UA rep as well, but since we homeschool I already had it on the fridge. Scanned and ready for D to email! Also, I know some kids in N. TX heard last week (per my D’s friends) - schools with larger numbers of finalists seem to have had their certificates sent via UPS instead of snail mail.
You know, maybe this needs its own thread,(which I don’t know how to do) but a comment by another parent made me start thinking about how schools acknowledge this great achievement. When my son made NMSF (in a class of 395 in a middle America public school that is 70% free/reduced lunch) he was the only one in the school and one of only 3 in the county. The principal tweeted his congratulations. For NMF, the principal called him into his office and told him. He kept the certificate and told him it would be presented at the academic awards night in May. I wonder if it will be announced this week to the school. When our soccer team won the state championship this year, we read the news clippings and school announcements and celebrated with them every time they won an important game and made it to the next round. I know individual academics isn’t a spectator activity, but the nice coordinated boys on the soccer team appreciated that others were behind them while they displayed their amazing skill and were successful doing hard things. And my sweet, nerdy uncoordinated boy is displaying his amazing skill and is doing hard things well. It would be nice if the school thought of taking some public pride in that.
That’s correct, @SevenDad. My letter (the first on CC) was by USPS. I actually opened the letter even though it was for my “principal.”
@Community2605 - you are spot on! I am appalled that our school did not have the courtesy to tell the kids first before they posted it on their website. Luckily I check the school’s website or I would still be hanging. When my son wins a Cross Country or Track event it is all over the place (not as much as football or basketball though) ha.
Indiana homeschooler here–just received the NMSC letter addressed to my daughter congratulating her for advancing to finalist. Letter dated the 9th. You all should get this soon!
That’s GREAT, @isaelijohjac!!! Your waiting game is now over! Congrats to your D!
The students’ letters are arriving!!! Hooray! Need a pigeon today because we will be away for the weekend.
No word from our public school in metro Atlanta, GA, and nothing in mail yet. I am hoping to get info so he can fill this out in midyear accomplishment info that is due this weekend to a number of schools. I just broke down and emailed our wonderful guidance counselor- hope to hear something soon…
@albert69 He most likely will be going to a school that offers a good NMSF scholarship. Which one, though is still up in the air! He likes Texas A&M and Arizona State (both of which he has visited), and is very interested in UCF, which we weren’t yet able to visit but will in March.
@anniechris I’m sure he’ll do fine wherever he goes and it sounds like you have some great options. And I think you mean NMF now?
My S’s school is like yours @community2605 in that he has almost 400 in his class and is the only NMF in the county. We live in a rural area. In the past, there has been a nice write-up to the local paper. The Collegeboard standard news release is all about NM, not about the kids, which of course is totally backward. I do think it is appropriate for NM kids to be recognized at an academic awards night as well.
