****UNOFFICIAL Class of 2015 National Merit Finalist Thread****

@QwertyuiopPro Yes, your school should have a certificate to give you. It’s kind of dinky, but it’s a certificate.

@kmaurak‌ - our DD was the only NMSF at her school, too, and was also accepted to UChicago (seriously considering as well). Still no official word on finalists status here in MN (heavy sigh) but we’re roadtripping to Chi-town next week. Are you attending Snow Days?

Mail finally arrived in upstate NY yesterday and S received finalist letter. Congrats to everyone, and all the best to all those recognized by NM process in selecting a school that is a great fit.

Still nothing official from our school in Memphis but my DS actually asked the principal face to face and was told “we will announce that on Tuesday” but he would not tell DS straight up that he made it. Seriously, you cannot make this stuff up!!!

@barfly TAMU and OU are my sons top two as well. Is your DS thinking engineering by chance? Mine has also said no to college football. Too funny!

Congratulations everyone! DS received his letter yesterday too.

Oklahoma is one of my DS top two choices also (along with Nebraska in his case).

@GoAskDad We were planning to head to OU this weekend too but DS has the flu. Hope you (and others going this weekend) have a great visit. Looks like it is going to be spring break in late March before we get there now because DS doesn’t want to miss any school.

My son is considering engineering at Oklahoma, and we will visit at the end of this month. Anyone else considering the engineering program there?

@kmywest my S is looking at their PE program there. We visited recently and really liked it. The scholarship is stackable so you could get more.

Petroleum engineering? Where do you all live? Amazing that you can stack on top of the NMF scholarship! Is your son looking at Honors?

No word in South Dakota either and no mail on Monday…

@kmywest‌ yes, petroleum. We live in Memphis, TN. He applied and was accepted to honors at both schools.

I’m officially a NMF in southern AL! Apparently my guidance counselor made a very nice announcement about it on Friday when I wasn’t there to hear it. Good luck to everyone still waiting!

@kmywest My DS is considering Mechanical Engineering at OU. Make sure they take you to the Engineering Practice Facility. It is a really nice facility for all the competition teams (concrete canoe, SAE racecar, mini-Baja, robotics, an aeronatical one I can’t recall the name of, etc.) The building was designed and built just for this purpose.

We were out of town the past few days but arrived home to find the letter in the mailbox! Proud of DS! We are in Alabama; until we hear from some regular decision schools and hopefully have some decent financial aid offers, we have no idea where he’ll be going.

I’m in PA (school’s in NJ), and I still haven’t gotten anythingggggg. Uh-oh…

I haven’t heard yet. But I haven’t received a letter about not being accepted yet either. Is it just safe to assume that my letter is running late in the mail? I checked my application and everything was turned in and accepted on time.

I was named a Semifinalist last semester, but I found out through a college and through my school, not by mail. I submitted the application for Finalist by the appropriate date. However, since I did not receive notification direct from National Merit, will I receive notification this time? I have checked my online account and my address is correct. What should I do?

For those still waiting for notification on Finalist status, the snail mail notifications that go to the school principal and your home vary greatly in how long it takes for them to arrive depending on your location, local mail speed/reliability, etc. There should be nothing for you to worry about at this point other than simply waiting to get the certificate from your school and the Finalist letter at your home. Letters were sent out in mid-January to those Semifinalists who would not advance to Finalist, and if you haven’t received one of those by now you should be in the clear.

@jazzberry…Just to clarify, Semifinalists do not receive any direct notification from NM, it’s only delivered to the High Schools. Luckily for you the college notification made you aware and you got your application done on time, and hopefully your HS is now aware to be watching for your certificate to arrive. In a worst case scenario, there really is no role in the remaining process for your HS other than handing you your Finalist certificate (and sending your Final transcript to whichever university you attend as they would with any other graduate) so their unfamiliarity with the process shouldn’t have any further impact on you.

If for some reason you don’t receive a Finalist letter at your home before Feb 23 (I believe that’s the date I saw elsewhere in this thread or possibly in another NM thread) you can call NMSC on that date and they will confirm your Finalist status over the phone. I don’t know for sure, but I’d guess they could also mail a copy of your Finalist certificate directly to you as well in the event that envelope gets lost in the shuffle at your HS. Congrats to all of you!!

The principal called NMSC and my son IS a finalist. She said they were puzzled that the letter hadn’t been received by the school, and they will reissue it. PTL.

Thank you for the tip!
