Hello all. I have a question regarding unpaid internships and resumes.

I'm an accounting major trying to build my resume up. Ultimate goal is a Big 4/other large public accounting firm offer. I shadowed/interned with a CPA last summer for a few weeks, and was not paid as it was just a family friend letting me get some experience.

I also have another friend who owns a small business and is willing to let me work there, but has been clear that he doesn't want to put me on the books and doesn't want to pay me illegally either, therefore this would also be an unpaid internship (just for the summer, as I will be back at school in the fall). The experience would be great, I'm leading a small group of people, interacting with customers, and completing tasks with a team. However, I was just wondering if unpaid internships are more or less frowned upon more than paid jobs.

I'm looking for a paying, real job, but while I'm searching, I really do want to get this experience in to have on my resume. Once I find a good job, I'd start there. In the mean time, this is much better experience than simply finding a job working at a fast food restaurant or something of the sort.

Any thoughts?
