I’m a high school junior but I’ve started looking for colleges. I want to major in journalism, and I have a 4.2 weighted gpa as of right now and i’m thinking i’ll get around a 1350 on SAT based on psat. I’m a Nevada resident and with scholarships, UNR will be really affordable. But i can’t decide if it’s a good college because my sister thinks i should go but i think she just wants me there with her and she wasn’t really a standout student with the grades that i get. So my point is, i know i could get into other colleges but money is a problem. Should i still go to UNR? Does anyone know if their journalism program is good? I really need help and if you know of a good affordable school that’s out of state please let me know. I don’t want to go to UNLV which is basically my only other option.
You need to talk with your parents, and find out how they expect you to pay for your education. Can they help you? How much can they pay each year?
Every college and university has a Net Price Calculator on its website. If your parents aren’t divorced, don’t own a business, and don’t own any property other than the family home, the NPC should be pretty accurate. Some NPCs will also calculate automatic merit-based scholarships based on your grades and ACT/SAT scores. Sit down with your parents and run the NPCs at UNR, UNLV, and a few other places that they like or that you like, and see whether the numbers look good or not.
You need to define what you mean by journalism in order to find places that specialize in that. Many colleges and universities don’t have majors named journalism, but do have majors in communication. So look at the individual courses offered for that major, and see if it looks like the things you want to learn are covered.
For example, the University of Missouri at Columbia, MO (Mizzou) has the highest-ranking undergraduate journalism program in the country, but even if it is affordable, it still might not have a specialization that you are looking for.
