Recently received a letter and brochure from Stanford's English Department to consider applying to Stanford this fall. I assume they found me through SAT testing since they knew my home address (sadly math score is uninspiring). Right?

I got a letter from their English department too! I’m a prospective English major, and I got an 800 in critical reading on the October SAT…still deciding whether I will apply there. Stanford would be amazing, but I doubt I’d get in. My GPA is only ~3.7, and my SAT is 2110 (2180 superscore). Good extracurriculars, but nothing special. Definitely would be a reach school for me.

It is nice to have any solicitation from Stanford. I posted this question over to the main Stanford forum since I was a bit confused regarding the subcategory 2012–probably meant to be date of Stanford graduation. Anyhow, in the main forum two others responded that they also received letters. It seems only the English Department is sending them out–at least at this time period. I tend to think of Stanford as specializing in research oriented subjects so I was pleased that they were reaching out to writers.

Stanford does not sound like a reach for you. Obviously Stanford already knows your SAT scores and they have asked you to consider applying to their school. Stanford is looking for talented writers-not amazing test scorers is the message I got.

My mom wants me to go to Stanford as I would also be close to home LOL. Wasn’t sure that Stanford would be a great fit for me but this letter even if it was put out by an Ad agency has certainly allay some of my fears in attending Stanford.
