About a week ago, I received a white envelope in the mail saying that I had been given early admission to Stanford. Did anybody else get one? I thought it was a little strange because it doesn't sound like a "likely" letter, it said I was given admission to the class of 2015. I was really suprised, it was definitely unexpected. How common this is?

Are you going to play sports for Stanford?

Actually one of my friends last year also got notified early about their admissions to Stanford even though they applied RD. (I don’t know too much about the details, but i think he found out about the same time as you last year)

well congrats non-the-less

How is that a “likely letter”? Sounds more like an acceptance letter to me. Congrats!!! :)

Stanford’s likely letters are much more strongly worded than others’–something like “It gives me great pleasure to inform you that initial reviews of your application indicate that you will be offered admission to Stanford”–why some students are often confused about what that means, I still don’t know.

@freezing beast, no i’m not playing sports or a recruited athlete for Stanford.
@StanfordCS, that’s what I thought too. Thanks!
@phantasmagoric, some of my friends have gotten likely letters from Yale, Columbia, and such, and you’re right, Stanford’s likely letter is much more forward than those schools and not like a typical “likely” letter. Thanks for clearing that up!

Anyone received one non-athlete likely letter this year?

Hey Mmichaels: Do you mind posting your stats (i.e. GPA, EC’s, SAT/ACT scores etc…)? I just want to see how I compare to accepted students. If you don’t want to post them on the public forum, then can you PM them to me please?

Thanks

I got one too. I was really shocked to see it. I had no idea colleges gave out these early notices.

^rp1292 and mmichaels

Did any of you had a Stanford interview? Are you guys QB applicant?

I was not a QB applicant. No interview. I just sent in an app

Congrats to you both! You must be thrilled!

@aegsch, Yes, I forwarded my QuestBridge app. No, I didn’t have a Stanford interview.

@rp1292, Congrats! I was so suprised too and very grateful.

I got one too; I’m a QB applicant. This isn’t a prank, right? Does this mean I’m actually admitted to Stanford? Just wanting to know if this letter is legit. It would be so embarrassing if it turned out this was fake and I wasn’t admitted.

I got one on Feb. 14th. Very Surprised.

At the end, it says, ****, you are among a very small group of applicants who will be receiving this early notificatin of their admission to Stanford.

Who else got in?

I’m non-athlete applicant (well i do play sports, but not exceptional)

I got in too! :D

Non-athlete applicant here.

That’s interesting, are all of you QB applicants? In addition you guys are obviously RD applicants, I wonder if they have this kind of notice for REA applicants before the December 15th date?

asljfkladsj;f bumping this thread to seek more information. Can anyone else give a further explanation as to these “likely letters”?

A person I know just received his acceptance under REA. What does it mean? I thought everyone got their letters Dec 10 and if you are deferred you have to wait until April 1? He’s a full paying American expat in a HS abroad. Do they have different admissions plans? What gives? Could it be he was first deferred Dec 10 then someone who was accepted under REA dropped out (crazy fool), and then this person was the next best qualified, so they accepted and notified him earlier than April 1, i.e. yesterday Feb 18, 2011? The acceptance info is posted on his Ps FaceBook with quite some detail.

Also, I know with certainty that he applied non-binding EA to another top tier PRIVATE U.S. university. Maybe that has something to do with it? Could 2 Admissions Offices be involved in a tug of war over this applicant? Dont some REA applicants learn their decisions before April 1st?

Anyway theres something a little strange and smelly about this. After reading all the other posts this is all sounding a bit weird. Could it all be a bad hoax? I would love some clarification.

^ Do you think you can quote a bit of what was said in the letter? Maybe you’re referring to a different kind of letter notification, not a likely letter.

As far as I know (I received a similar letter a few years ago), Stanford sends quite a few letters to athletes, and another 100-120 “exceptional” students, for academics or accomplishments, backround, etc. in the RD round. These are the students who they predict will get into every one of Stanford’s main competitors (he/she applied to), in an attempt to get you interested in Stanford before you hear from them. You’re in about the top 0.5% of the applicant pool this year–and as your letter probably indicates, you’re going to get in, so long as you don’t fail miserably at the end of classes or commit a serious crime. In the meantime, congrats :)
