UNT - University of North Texas - airport

I was hoping there was a UNT forum, but did not find one. Since I have seen some music majors posting about UNT, I thought I would ask here. How does one fly to UNT? Dallas Fort Worth airport, I assume. What is the transportation like to UNT?

My D is looking at applying for Vocal Performance / Music Ed as a financial safety since she is a NMSF and would receive a full ride - tuition and room and board - as a NMF. We are in the Northeast so this would not be a school to drive to.

Thanks so much for all your help so far in figuring out NMSF and audition information!!

Yes, DFW and rent a car.

What about my 18 year old flying back and forth for breaks?

And why is my post second? That happened to another thread I started…

I am the great Karnak and anticipate your every question.

You will find that students returning home from break are the bread and butter for shuttle services almost everywhere. Google DFW UNT shuttle.
However, for the audition trip, since I assume there will be two of you, a car rental would be cheaper and more convenient.
BTW…I think that the CC clock is out of whack.

LOL at the Great Karnak.

I am not the DFW expert by any means. I have Dallas on the brain since this morning I was helping D arrange a flight for a YAP audition taking place there in Dallas. Fly in by 10AM and leave that night at 10PM. wooooosh

UNT is an easy 20-30 minute drive northwest of the DFW airport. There are multiple shuttles to the airport as well as many local students who are often willing to give classmates a ride to the airport. UNT is a wonderful school for vocal music education. I have a daughter in her second year in instrumental music education at UNT.

Technically you can get from DFW airport to UNT, but it requires three trains and one bus.

Trinity Railway Express (TRE)
DART Green Line
The A Train (operated by DCTA)
Bus from the A Train station to UNT

[DART.org - DART Rail System Map](DART Schedules and Maps)

hey Sciencegirlmom! I see that there is a train from the airport—are you aware of a stop at the Dallas Opera?

Do you mean Winspear Opera House? The Green Line will get you to the Pearl/Arts District station. From there you can walk about 2-1/2 blocks to the Winspear Opera House. Winspear Opera House is labeled at the very top middle of this map:

To get to UNT, take a shuttle service from the airport or rent a car. Public transportation will take you HOURS and is not direct.

Yes…the Winspear Opera House…but from what I can see she is better off taking a taxi! Thanks!!

Thanks for all the replies. UNT was not even being considered until we saw the NMF list. We had been looking at schools within driving distance, but with the full ride we could easily afford the flights. Is there a thread any where about how to manage flying to college? I was spoiled and went two hours away so we could load up the car. Do kids just take less when they have to fly there? Or buy stuff locally? I tried searching but did not come up with any thing.

In the parents forum, when it’s getting close to freshman year departure, there are plenty of discussions on flights, what to take , what to leave at home. It seems rather daunting but after your D’s first audition trip, it’s like falling off a rock. Best to discuss flights with someone in your region. The upside of flying to DFW, it’s a huge hub for AA with lots of cheap flights going to every corner of the country. And yes, buy stuff locally.

Seeing that your daughter is a vocal performance major, I would think flying in would definitely be doable. We’ve driven our son back and forth from the midwest to UNT three times now, and I’ve thought if it weren’t for the instruments he could fly in and pay for extra baggage and have the rest shipped. When we initially set him up as a freshman in a dorm we did buy local too; mini-refrigerator, laundry basket, plastic organizers, laundry supplies, toiletries, etc. Walmart and Target in Denton have the usual college set-up stuff. Also as far as packing, my son didn’t need the heavy-duty winter clothes…he mentioned that he was wearing shorts into November!

I was worried too about how son would get back and forth from UNT to the DFW airport when he’d come home on breaks, there didn’t appear to be any shuttle bus service, just the kind of thing where you reserve a guy with a car. But that seemed to work out OK too; he always seemed to find other students at his dorm who were leaving/arriving at the same time and they carpooled together, either one of them had a car, or they shared limosine service.

As far as returning home and carting stuff back, some of son’s dormmates chipped in on a rental unit for storage, that way you avoid taking everything back, like refrigerator, furniture, TV, etc.

We live outside Texas and have a music student at UNT. We have found DFW to be very easy and with recent highway construction even easier! Freshman year our son used an airport shuttle van, either shared with other out-of-state friends heading to the airport, or got a ride from friends. There are so many out of state music students at UNT so the roads back and forth to DFW and Dallas Love are well traveled. He now has a car and has parked in long term parking a few times but most of the time has had no trouble finding someone to take him and pick him up (he does the same for others when he can).

As far as “stuff”, Denton has every big box store you would need and they really cater to the students. For the summers when he came home, he shared a storage rental unit with 5 or 6 friends - very reasonable, safe, and uncomplicated.

We made the decision early on that the cost of flights for him to come home and for us to attend performances was simply part of the total cost of attending college out of state. With the wonderful scholarships available at UNT, it has been manageable for us.

One final wonderful benefit for out of state families is that almost all the major performances at UNT are streamed live on the internet. The quality of the live feed is outstanding. If you’d like to sample one of the upcoming performances, here is the link: [UNT Recording Services - Live](http://recording.music.unt.edu/live/). Scroll down to see a list of the live upcoming events.

Stores such as Bed, Bath and Beyond, WalMart and Target have services where you can go to your local store and select needed items and pay for them and those things are packed up at the destination- when your student arrives at school, they can go to the branch of the store there and pick up the boxes. Last year, this was so common here that some of the stores had huge trailers set up in the parking lots and crews unloading in assembly line fashion!

Nova07, thanks for the heads up about the live streaming. My son is interested in UNT and I just sent him the link so he can check out some of the perfomances.

You usually fly to DFW here. But, you can sometimes get cheaper flights to Love Field. You will want to rent a car when arriving. The drivers are, well, aggressive her compared to every place else I have ever lived or traveled to in my entire life. I would not want my children driving to Denton from here, and we live not too far away, closer than the airport is to Denton. So, it would be worth it to look in to a shuttle. Also, there is horrible construction around the airport right now that makes the drive out of there and back a nightmare. However, for the older person (as in, not just a high schooler here to interview) the drive will get more double. Once they have been here a while, there is a great train that is easy to use that goes to Denton. It does not go to the airport though, but it gets in to Lewisville and then you can transfer there and make it to Love Field.

Denton has every store possible. And when they are out of stock, you can just drive down to Lewisville and beyond for things.
