I heard that at the end of the quarter, you can exchange your unused meal swipes for either juice or water. Does anyone happen to know the "conversion rate" for this? (That is to say, "how many" unused swipes get you "how many" cartons of juice/water?)

one swipe = 2 bottles (20 fl oz each) of water/soda, or one bottle of gatorade and one bottle of water/soda

so a case i think has 24 bottles? = 12 swipes. which is worth more than $60 (cheapest meal at bruin cafe with cash is more than $5 i think)…so in essence you’re paying over $60 for less than $15 worth of water.

basically, it’s a huge ripoff so try to not accumulate too many extra swipes. it only makes sense to do it when you have so many left that your only other option would be to not use them at all and let them go to waste. also, there have been groups where you can donate swipes and they will buy bruin cafe meals to donate to the homeless, etc so that’s another option.

1 swipe = (2) 20 oz drinks. It’s a ripoff, but better than nothing, especially if you end up with 30+ extra swipes like many people on premiere.

can you buy stuff from bruincafe w/ swipes?

Yes. One swipe=entree, drink, and maybe something else.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I expected it to be a ripoff. But I think there’s a question remaining: Which is a bigger ripoff–(1) the water/juice/soda trade-off or (2) MyPizza?

If I recall correctly, 4 swipes for a pizza and soda pack through the deNeve mypizza? (Obviously another huge ripoff)

Thanks again.

OR you can do what my friend did- 10 swipes = 1 box of pizza lol it was pretty big

with 12 cans of soda :)

How much sense would it make to put up a poster in the dorm area saying something like, “Hey! I have tons of unused swipes! I’ll swipe you in to wherever if you give me $5. Call me at…”

Would that sound insane, or is something like that practical?

That poster would probably get torn down by ORL staff or Housing administration, I’m pretty sure you can’t sell your swipes…

Most people are going to have extra swipes left over.
In fact, at the end of every quarter last year, people from my floor alternated swiping pizza during dead week and finals week so we’d always have food around while studying.
4 swipes = 1 large pizza + 6 cans of soda
Share, don’t sell.

pretty much everyone will have extra swipes, and if they don’t then one of their friends will have loads of swipes. so you wouldn’t have much luck selling swipes even if you could…

I have two questions in regard to UCLA’s meal policy: Is it ok for me to bring my parents over on the weekend to eat in the UCLA’s residential dinning places using my own meal swipes? Also is there a limit for how much food we could get for one swipe?

If you have premier, yes.
In the Rieber/Covel/Hedric/DeNeve cafeterias, there’s no limit. But in the “boutiques” like bruinCafe, it’s one swipe for this, this, and that.

If you have a Premier plan, then yes, you can swipe anybody into the dining hall.

In the dining hall it’s all you can eat. In the quick service restaurants (Bruin Cafe, Rendezvous, Puzzles) it’s one menu item (ie meal combo, coffee and pastry, smoothie, etc) per swipe.

But with myPizza–that’s 4 swipes (i.e. around $30, assumeing a value of $7.50 per swipe) for a pizza and 6 sodas. HUGE RIPOFF! I would value the pizza and sodas at, say, $20 (maximum) ordinarily.

And for the juice tradeoff–one swipe for two 20 oz. cans, so that’s, oh, paying $7.50 for what I would value at $3 (maximum).

So–

myPizza: $30/$20=1.5
Juice Trade: $7.50/$3=2.5

Then I suppose it’s a given that myPizza is a better value than the “juice trade,” but still–it’s like paying 50% extra, and that’s a conservative estimate. This really makes it seem like it’s totally worth it to avoid skipping breakfast.

Well, I read that bruinCafe charges one swipe for a smoothie. Again, huge ripoff.

The website says that mypizza can be ordered with a credit card also. How much do they charge if you use a credit card?

a lot, it is most definitely not worth it to actually pay for the pizza, since it’s kind of crap pizza

^ agreed. it’s a lot better if you load it with toppings (which are free using swipes). i miss getting pizzas with ham/pepperoni/tomatoes…

I have heard from some ppl that UCLA’s food is really delicious…just can’t wait to try it out
