Did anyone hear the NPR piece yesterday about the girl who had homeschooled in the cab of her mom’s truck, and upon finishing with her associate’s degree from community college got such a call from Harvard? She was accepted as a x-fer and just graduated.

"I tell my kids not to check that box at the SAT’s, and we don’t get anything in the mail or any phone calls. They just ask for info from the specific schools they are interested in, which keeps control of the whole thing in their court. "

I told my kids to make sure they checked the box. As a result, older son got a free fly-in to Wash U, and could have applied for other fly-in offers to other schools.

Yes, they got lots of unwanted mail and some phone calls, too, but we figured that was worth it to have a chance to learn about some options otherwise they may not have heard of.

When I applied to college, I really loved getting that kind of mail.

My son just received a call from Harvard. We were expecting it as Harvard also contacted my two older sons. I think it is because high PSAT scores are unusual for our zip code.
