I want to major in business/Economic, so which school should I choose: Colgate or University of Rochester. Also, for U of R I have to pay 8K and Colgate is only 1K a year
If Colgate is 1k a year, go colgate. Colgate’s connections are strong and their economics major is strong. Both schools are similar level academic institutions so go for the cheaper option.
@obsessedwcollege However, I like the diversity environment in U of R, compared to Colgate.
The decision is not about the college, it’s about you. Who are you? Who do you want to be? What do you want? What do you like? What do you need? Go to the place that better meets your needs and desires.
I just came across this article mentioning Colgate. This may be of interest.

Go 'gate!
Please help me decide guys!!!
Both are comparable. So if you’re still undecided, and don’t have a solid reason to choose the more expensive option, go for the cheaper one (Colgate).
Guys, please help me decide !!!
Think about your other interests and see which school has more of them. Rochester is more artsy, strong music in Eastman and in the University. It is in the city - Colgate is a small town. Both are very different and both are good academically. Take a look at the course catalogs and see exactly which classes you will take, how many distribution requirements, etc…
Can your parents pay the $8K a year for Rochester without any hardship, or would you have to take out loans?
Unless you have an aversion to it, I’d save the $28k and choose the LAC – Colgate.
However, if there is a big mismatch for fit in favor of Rochester, and you can afford Rochester easily (despite the price difference), Rochester would be fine too.
But the cost difference definitely gives Colgate the lead out of the… gate.
In another thread you said you’re low income. How are you paying for these schools?
I would have to take some loans for Rochester, but I feel the student body( diversity ) and the flexibility of class selection( no gen edu) is better fit for me. So I should pick Rochester ???
Rochester is a great school and it sounds like you really want to go there. There is a better diversity of students there - Colgate is very very homogeneous. Pick Rochester.
At this point, you are making the biggest decision of your life, the first of many big decisions. There is no bad decision as long as YOU are the one to make it. The only bad decision is to keep begging for help. You don’t need any more help.
Own it! Embrace it. Empower yourself!
You have all of the information that you need.
Look inside yourself and make the best decision for YOU.
Nobody else needs to help you nor should they.
The future is uncertain. All we can ever do is make the best decision that we can given the information that we have. Don’t be afraid! Get used to living with risk!
So which school is better for business/economic major, and better for me in future, in terms of salaries or going to grad school

better for me in future, in terms of salaries or going to grad school
[/QUOTE]
One is not better than the other. What you do in either of these colleges - the opportunities you look for and take advantage of - will have a much greater impact on your future job and grad school admission than which of the two you select.
So stop worrying about it and either:
- Choose UofR because it seems like that's where you want to go, and you're only holding back because you think that Colgate might have more "opportunities" which it doesn't.
OR, if both are equally appealing,
- Choose Colgate because it'll save you money, and UofR doesn't give you any particular advantage.
Colgate doesn’t offer a business major, you know that, right?
One school I like( Rochester) however, for Colgate it is nearly full ride and cover my transportation cost back home during breaks, and seem like that Colgate will give a better job and salary. Or just pick Rochester which I like and comfortable with. ???
I want to echo #14 from ClassicRockerDad. This is your decision. When someone says “choose Colgate” you still ask us to help you decide. When someone says “choose Rochester” it’s the same. There is no reason to choose one over the other purely based on imaginary future opportunities – because you can find opportunities through either.
You are asking from us something that we cannot answer, because
- they are both great schools and it’s not like one is significantly “better” like Harvard versusa mediocre community college
- only you and your family know if the price difference is worth it or if it would create an unbearable burden and
- we can’t know how you perform in different environments, and why you seem to think you won’t succeed at Colgate.
If you and your family are willing to pay the extra money to go to Rochester because you are convinced it is the place for you, great. It sounds like you are ready to dive in. However I would not advise taking out loans other than federal loans. But if you can swing it, it’s your decision, your money and your choice. Be aware that it may limit you in terms of taking unpaid summer internships or travel. But being happy for four years may be worth it to you.
If you and your family take the more practical, fiscally prudent path, with a positive attitude you can also make it work at Colgate. You might use any extra resources for internships and travel. You would have less stress about a summer or extra job, etc. It could be a formative experiences if you rise to the occasion and do your part to create the environment you wish existed there.
This is a big decision, certainly. But you are not wrecking your life by choosing one and turning down the other. Either way, you will be fine. Please let us know your final thoughts, and know that many posters wish you well. Sending best wishes to you and your family.
