I recently got a copy of my transcript. My weighted GPA is 4.15 and my unweighted GPA is 3.45. I’ve heard that many universities cut out electives and calculate only the core classes on their own GPA scale. I’m just confused about the whole situation and would like to have some clarity about my GPA.
What do you define as “electives?” If they are gym, health, art, or musical classes such as orchestra, chorus, or the like, then they will certainly be cut out. Core classes count as traditional subjects: math, science, etc…
Most selective universities USUALLY(Not always) look at both. They look at your weighted gpa with context to your schools scale as well as with your course rigor. Unweighted gpa is a more universal scale that they can look at and compare your gpa with. For both gpa’s they usually only use core classes(math, social science, science, english, foreign language&any ap’s). If you plan on increasing both gpa’s you should consider cutting out silly electives and getting good grades in them so that they count into the recalculation.
One more question. My high school uses a 7 point grade scale. Do colleges calculate GPA using a ten point scale or 7 point grading scale. I live in NC and want to go to App State or NC State if any of that helps.
All of this is university specific so it just depends. Some colleges will take the GPA on the transcript. Some will just use core classes. Some will recalculate. If you want to find out what a specific college does then send a note to their admissions office.
@"Erin’s Dad" How does one find out if this college takes transcript GPA while that college re calculates GPA?
Is it a kind of information that only certain type of people(i.e. counselors) can access?
