Unweighted GPA

How do colleges look at unweighted GPAs, because if I calculated mine correctly, I would have a 3.3 GPA, which would be ridiculous if I'm #6 in the class and according to that our valedictorian would have around a 3.6 GPA. I'm at an IB school, but it was a necessary part of the district curriculum to count Pre-IB Spanish II and Pre-IB Geometry/Pre-IB Algebra II as regulars grade points.

They'll base your GPA on the school's scale...when you apply, your school would send a description of the curriculum / grading scale / and other BS to make the school sound good (or at least thats what my school does lol...they better if I'm paying 12k a yr). So I wouldn't worry about it.

many schools ask for the "highest gpa" of the class. so if the valedictorian has a 3.6 and you have a 3.3 you're set. you'll be fine.

Well, I have a 3.6 unweighted and I think that the top person in our school has a 3.8 uw, but the 2-8 people have like 3.4 uw. I'm number 9 and my uw is higher than the people that have higher weighted gpa's than me. Can I protest?

How excatly does your school calculate weighted grades? My (public) school doesn't do that, so I just have a 4.0. Please explain...

usually when you have higher level courses, instead of recieving 4 points for an "A" you'll recieve 5 points. Example;

Unweighted
A=4 math
A=4 english
A=4 science
B=3 spanish
B=3 gym
B=3 history

==GPA 3.5

If you had 3 *honors/AP/IB classes it would look like this:

Weighted
*A=5 AP math
*A=5 Hon English
A=4 science
B=3 spanish
B=3 Gym
*B=4 AP History

== GPA 4.0

This is the best that i can explain it.

You know whats funny? My school has the same scale for UW GPA but they dont calculate it the same...its the worst calculating ive ever seen. im protesting it to the county

That makes sense-- but wouldn't weighted grades be differant from school to school, depending on the number of classes that are required but can't be taken as honors-- such as gym, art, music, etc.

Plus, if a student takes many electives in addition to honors/AP/IB classes, their GPA would be pulled down because the highest you can get in an elective style class would be 4.0 because honors are not offered.

that`s exactly what my school does.

my school goes on the 100 point system (we have grades but its 100 points on our transcripts) and completely no weighing. so the top ranking students are half regular half IB students. people taking full IB classes are measured the same way as people that take english as their only academic course.

OKAY GOOD! I got a 4.2 and our vale got a 5.1 I think that's pretty good, right? Not by CC standards, of course.

wrxstiav,

Does your school rank students? Selected colleges look your rank and class size.

if a school doesn't weight grades, do adcoms assume that the teachers grade easier for the harder courses to sort of....compensate???

i sure hope not. But does anyone know?

my school ranks by weighted gpa, but it factors in electives into the gpa calculation. i take the same classes as our val and get the same grades in those classes, but he is ranked higher because he doesn't do any electives, while MUN, Journalism, and Drama (non-Honors/AP) bring down my weighted gpa. have any of you guys had this problem? I don't know what to do about it. I talked to my GC and our Principal and they both said "that's how it is..." AHHHHHHH! What can I do (besides drop my electives)?

If an elective brings down someone's GPA at my school, then they take the class as an aide and get no grade. Only the top 5 kids do this, though.

Since my school doesn't do weighted grades, I don't have this problem. However, it is basically a huge injustive that has existed since weighted grades came into existence.

If I remember correctly, there was actually a big controversy over this in the news sometime. A physically handicapped girl was exempt from gym requirments, meaning that her GPA was slightly higher than another girl who had to take the gym classes and who's GPA was pulled down because the highest she could get was 4.0.

I don't know how the situation was resolved though...

yes vzzzz, my school does rank, i'm 6/515. IB students get higher grade points than AP students, but we have to take required electives like speech, AP GOVT, and AP Econ...so when u average those in it does indeed bring it down. They also gave us regulars grade points for Pre-IB Spanish II, so it's all very messed up. So with a 3.3 unweighted, that looks really weird for someone in top 10.

You can't protest for a higher unweighted but lower weighted. That would be penalizing people for tougher courses.

At my school only AP courses are weighted. I have a 3.98 unweighted, but have taken 13 APs so I have a 4.446. Should someone who took 0 AP courses but got a 4.0 be considered a higher rank than I am.

However, are school does not penalize for electives as AP courses add in a flat 0.03 per semester to your grade.
