Hi,
I'm trying to major in journalism and I was admitted into UMTC (journalism), UW I'm still waiting to hear. Is the journalism program better in UMTC? Or is UW better?

I’d say comparable. I’d pick on other factors–mostly cost–as the schools are very similar in many ways. Big state flagships in nice attractive cities. Udub probably has a little more school spirit. But pretty much the same.

UDub probably did have more school spirit but I’d say it’s about equal now. The U of M is reapidly gaining in that area as it has become significantly more selective in the last decade, has more students are living on campus, and has built a brand new football stadium on campus. But yea academically they’re almost identical and are really similar in that they’re both just outside downtowns of very similar major metro areas.

It’s hard to find two more similar schools. Minnesota is much more similar to UDub than it is to the other UW that the U of M is more often compared with.

Yup, the more I thought about it the more similar they seemed. Almost uncanny right down to the fact that both were pretty much commuter schools drawing most students from within 50 miles but now they both are adding OOS students and dorms and becoming more selective. I don’t know about UM but at UW frats have a significant draw and influence. Many folks I meet in business are still in touch with their frat brothers who tend to work in the area too.

The two are very similar. I’d say that Udub has a tad more general prestige, but this is likely severely biased by my location in the Pacific NW. It probably isn’t enough to make a big difference. I’m not an expert on journalism, so I can’t help there specifically.

I’d look at cost (if OOS, Minnesota is cheaper) and your personal preferences. Minneapolis and Seattle are different cities.

Going from just what I’ve heard, Minnesota frats are not all that big but they’re still definitely there and noticeable- just not as big as at some other schools. They do got a pretty cool set-up though with the frat houses (more like mansions) lining University Avenue from Dinkytown down to the Football Stadium and Williams Arena.
