My name is Kai, and I'm a freshman at the University of Rochester. I'm a Public Health (HBS) major and a Sustainability and Women's Studies double minor. I only applied to one school last year because UofR was my dream school and I got in ED1. If you have any questions feel free to ask them here and I'll try to get back to you ASAP.

Question! On my MyRoc account, it says that I am not applying for aid, which I don’t remember putting when I made my account. I am applying for aid, though. I have not submitted my application yet, so will this change once I do? I do not see a place where I can edit that information.

It should change when you submit your application and FAFSA, but I don’t really remember if that’s what happened to me. I called Financial Aid numerous times last year to make sure everything on MyRoc account was correct. So, I’d suggest you call them tomorrow and they will fix it for you.

I got A LOT of financial aid from UofR. It was actually cheaper for me to come here than to go to my state university (Rutgers). I didn’t get any scholarship though; I got grants instead, but I think grants are better because I don’t have to pay them back and I don’t have to keep up a gpa to keep them.

Yes, people respect me because UofR is a REALLY good school. No, we are not regarded as a SUNY.

Does rochester have an active sailing team? I see the website but nothing has been updated in a while. Is there enough money and support for it to possibly become a varsity sport or a more legitimate club sport?

@iamthatstudent - My ED agreement was sent with my Common App. Yes, you fill your CSS/FAFSA out after you get in but the school should send you an email reminding you to fill them out when the time comes.

@stemmmm - Everyone here is suuper nice and we call love this school. We have two dining hall’s one is decent and the other one is either a hit or a miss (most days it’s a miss). As for dorms, the rooms in Sue B are smaller than the ones in the Quad but it’s not uncomfortably small. What’s great about Sue B is that we have a convenient store and one of the dining halls right down stairs.

@eps96 I don’t think we have a sailing team and I’m not sure about the what it takes to start something like that. Sorry.

Actually, UR has a very active sailing team.
We attend quite a number of regatta and just purchased a new boat!
Since I just joined, I think I should refer to you to more senior member.
I’ll ask her if I can give you her email.

If you’re not sure about an answer, I think it would be best to just say you don’t know. And you could’ve at least checked CCC, it comes up right away.

Kai, thanks for doing this. Does someone applying for merit simply send in their app and wait for the university to announce what merit they get? I’ve just spent the last 1.5 hours all over the website and google and I cannot find the answer to this question. If there are adel merit apps to do and deadlines to meet, can you suggest where I might find these? Thanks.

All applicants are considered for all possible merit awards. No separate application required.

If you feel that you have some achievements that would warrant consideration for the Renaissance & Global Scholarship that might otherwise get overlooked by the admissions committee, you may nominate yourself for consideration.

I was wondering if you are familiar with the REMS program? I just wanted to get a student perspective of it versus what we read online/information from admissions. Thanks!

@WayOutWestMom- thanks for the link on the Renaissance & Global Scholarship. It looks like a fantastic program! I did not see anything on the site that mentioned nominations. Do you have any additional info on this by any chance?

Applicants can be nominated for consideration either by their UR admissions counselor or by submitting a self-nomination. (The link for self-nomination was given in my previous post.)

Nominees are evaluated by special separate committee and about 50-60 finalists will receive invitations in March to attend an on-campus interview. 15 Ren & Global Scholars will be selected from among the interviewed finalists. Notifications of scholarship winners are sent out about 2 weeks after the interview. (Interview dates are usually the 3rd week of March with notifications of winners sent out in early April.)
