My S21 has narrowed down his choices to a top 3 (UofSC, Iowa, and Tulsa). He’s still waiting on decisions from 3 schools but 2 of those will almost certainly reject him (Chicago and Rice), and the last is very likely unaffordable even if he’s admitted (Kenyon). Since he’s still not ready to make a final decision, we aren’t paying the enrollment deposit yet. But if he does decide on UofSC, he’d definitely want to live in the honors dorm. I called housing today and was assured there are plenty of spots for all honors freshmen to live there who want to (although I take that with a grain of salt). She did mention that most students find roommates via social media. But my son shuns social media so I’m concerned about him finding a compatible roommate. He’s very happy-go-lucky and gets along with just about anyone, but I know he wouldn’t be happy if he ended up with a vulgar, pot-smoking roomie.
Does anyone have insight or thoughts into roommate matching, specifically for honors?
Thank you for the info. UofSC is also a top contender for my son. He is also not on social media so not sure how the roommate search will go. Let us know if you find out!
Same here, my son was considering expanding his social media presence to find a roommate, but it does feel a little awkward. Glad he is not the only one.
I just got accepted into the honors college with IB program. As an international student, I am not sure about the school reputation and the employment situation after graduation. I am wondering if USC can compare with other top-ranked colleges.
I called housing again this morning to see if I would get different information. This young lady said that some honors freshmen end up in Lincoln 650. Still an honors LLC but not the main honors dorm where most freshmen live. I didn’t want to give anyone false hope. This sounds more like what I’ve heard in the past.
She also said that all students would be selecting their dorm on June 1 so the application date to housing isn’t as important. It sounds like there is some uncertainty about the process because it’s new this year. She also said that students would either choose a roommate or be assigned one before June 1. That part is confusing to me also because then they choose a dorm building on June 1, so how that works with a roommate I don’t know.
From what I read, UofSC is known for business but it’s good and affordable college overall. Honors college will definitely help with opportunities but at the end of the day, you will need to take all opportunities and make them beneficials and marketable to you after graduation.
It absolutely makes sense. My major is international business. My worry is that a lot of companies have target schools, which they will recruit students. I’m not sure about USC.
We are just waiting for all the financials to come in MidMarch to make a decision- he is deciding between 3 schools.
We are touring UofSC Friday (he can have 2 guests for the general tour and wants to have both my husband and me there) and then again the next Friday for the Business and Honors Program (can only have 1 guest, so will get more info then. We are only 1-1/2 hours away so not a big deal.
Maybe we should set up a “mom matching program” Kidding!! I would never!! My son (good kid-serious about his education but likes to hang out and have fun/Not into drinking or drugs/Wants to find a cool church but not preachy/not a gamer but will play Madden/into sports -especially lacrosse and golf/kinda messy but will pick up without too much grumbling/likes his sleep/really easy going) would KILL me!!!
Lol, you are right. They need to figure this out on their own. I may try to get my son to open a FB account just for connecting with colleges and future classmates and remind him that he can always delete the account later.
It definitely depends on your major. Their business school is amazing but what is also incredible is that there is a 70-80% med school acceptance with Honors students who apply, which is one of the reasons why I’m seriously considering this school.
So many kids are getting their internships not through schools but LinkedIn and indeed today. I think the ‘where’ you go is less important than in the past.
You will spend four years. Find the right school in regards to fit and finances. That’s my opinion.
I think Handshake is a big thing too. I think how important what school someone attended may depend somewhat on the discipline, but most schools have at least some connections with certain companies or research institutions. There are multiple pathways and each student will find there way. Obviously with COVID there are less on campus recruiting events right now and who knows what recruiting will look like going forward.
In any case I don’t think OP needs to worry that they will be lacking interest from employers coming out of the IB program at UofSC.
Do you, or anybody else know or have experience with using the Student Health Center with your family coverage, as an out of network provider. The health insurance for a student for 1 years seems to be very expensive. Our family policy gives us National Coverage, but it does not appear that the Student Health Center is in Network. They were able to provide me with a list of over 100 providers locally that would be in network. But, I realize it would be more likely that my D21 would seek care if all she had to do was go to the student health center. At that point, I would think the out of network extra costs would still be less expensive than buying the University coverage for the school year?
We haven’t looked into it yet since daughter has not decided with school to attend.
We will have to contact our health care provider after she commits to her college to see the plan will cover when she is away to school or if we need to look for students health plans either through school or from our healthcare provider.
