UofSC Honors College and Top Scholars Class of 2025

I have no recent experience with student health centers. My question would be if the student could get care and just pay cash? Or as you mention, visit as an out of network provider. I don’t know if student health centers accept cash payment but that’s what I would want to know. I doubt it would be worth buying a student health insurance policy if you have good family coverage.

I have a quick question! For the departmental honors scholarships, do you have to be enrolled in UofSC to apply?

Yes, they definitely can use the health center even if they don’t have the insurance that is offered by USC.

Does getting rejected from Top Scholars mean getting rejected for the McNair, 1801 scholarships etc too?

Has anyone had any notification that their child received the Provost scholarship?

Not yet. S21 got word last night about a merit scholarship, but no mention of Provost.

Is everyone finding that the OOS merit scholarships that came out on Monday were very in inline with what was posted on the web site for GPA and Test Scores?

No, I’m thinking the criteria must be different this year. We figured it would be a little different, given the test optional choice this year. S21 has 4.0 UW, about a 4.7 W, and 1600 SAT (on one test, not SS.) We thought he’d be in the running for TS, but he wasn’t chosen. We then hoped for the Alumni (4.67gpa and 1567 on website) or the Elite (4.57 and 1549 on website) but he was offered the Excellence (4.48 and 1486 on the website.) He is a NMF, has 10 APs, with 5s on all tests taken, lots of ECs, including class president for 3 years, so we were a little surprised at the offer. But it must have been a very competitive process this year. Congrats to all!

My D21 had a very similar experience. Maybe they assumed since your S21 is a NMF, he would have listed UofSC first, and will he will collect the additional $6,000 on the Provost. I believe those two can be stacked together, which gives him $8,000, which is a nice amount. Congrats, those are strong stats.

Thank you and congrats to your daughter also. My son did list UofSC on his NMF application, so we are hopeful he’ll have the Provost too, but he hasn’t been notified about it yet.

Congrats to all who received merit scholarships.

This year is crazy year, with the pandemic and test optional resulting schools received way more applications for admission compared to the the past. My guess is they have too many students who qualified for merits but not enough money to go around.

We were hoping daughter received TS invite to make it more attractive than our in-state school. She ended up receiving Elite, which is nice and generous of UofSC but may not be enough to convince us to send her there.

I thought the same but then both up thread and even more on FB are indicating they were actually “bumped up” a level from their initial acceptance/merit letter (either from the 40 to 60 bracket or 60 to 80 bracket) so they appear to have plenty of money to give.

D21 qualified based on their charts for the “excellence” level but was offered the lower “superlative” - which is not a huge difference overall but keeps costs parity (and scholar level parity, Capstone Scholar vs. 1794 Scholar) with Tennessee but twice as far away and Tennessee is also stronger for her major so I think we have enough info now to decline UoSC.

We hit exactly what the book showed. My daughters GPA was .3 higher but the test score equaled what the book showed. We got in state + $500. She had a 4.5 and 32 (superscore - which they used this year). Also, in Honors.

I had hoped for the 2K a year. The GPA was ok but not test score.

No complaints at all about UofSC. They have shown D21 a lot of love with Honors College and in-state tuition +$500. That means a lot during a process where kids take a lot of hits to their ego (that are probably a good learning experiences in the long run). In the end I don’t think it will be enough to overcome UNC in-state, but it has been much appreciated and we have given them a long hard look.

In general terms and this is just by pedigree and nothing else - Michigan, the UCs, UVA, UNC, William and Mary - regular is far above U of SC Honors. Doesn’t mean someone shouldn’t go to U of SC - money, fit, etc. But if someone is going by pedigree. Florida and UT Austin fans would probably put them in that basket too. I’m not sure. Maybe UTA - Florida is ranked higher by US News but not in the world’s perception.

I will be stoked, for example, if my daughter gets into Emory or Rice, etc. Whether or not we can afford to attend, you can always hang your hat on that you got in!!! U of SC Honors college - not an easy admit - although we were turned down at Florida State and waitlisted at Pitt. I guess you never know.

Where is this on Facebook?

I’d like to know where this is on Facebook and in the thread also, because all I see is that people did not get what they expected, or got exactly what their GPA and ACT/SAT score matched them with. I have not seen anybody say they were bumped up a level.
