Hi everyone. I am an international transfer student who will begin my Sophomore year in 2021 fall. I am considering choosing UTSG, Emory, or NYU. I am admitted by NYU MCC.
- Pros: UofT: In the long term, maybe I can continue my study after obtaining PR.
NYU:Communication is my interest and MCC is prestigious. It is a stern major which means I have three years OPT.
Emory: Few students in one class, I can obtain more resources without much competition compared with others
- Cons: UofT: It is hard to get a good GPA and I don’t have some specific interested major
NYU: Too expansive, it is hard for an international student to find a good job in the US in the field of communication
Emory: Personally, I prefer to study downtown. I think the atmosphere of Emory does not match me
- Costs and any aid: NYU may cause a financial burden, but can be afforded without a loan for undergraduate
- Any special considerations: My boyfriend and lots of friends study at UofT, and if I go to Canada with him, my parents will not worry about the safety issue.
- Intended Major: Communication/Economics/Humanities, personally I love communication the best
I can hardly be objective because I have to face realistic conditions, and my relationship lets me want to go to UofT more but I know it is very irrational. Can anyone give me some suggestions? Thanks!
Why is studying in Canada “very irrational” ?
I mean, I know that want to study in Canda partly because my boyfriend study at UofT. I try to prevent such factors to influence my decision but it is really hard.
As you know, Emory University is not located in downtown Atlanta, but downtown Atlanta is not an attractive place.
If you prefer to study in a downtown area, Toronto is a great option.
You wrote that NYU was “too expansive”; did you intend to write that NYU was "too expensive " ? If so, then cross NYU off of your list.
The only rational option for you seems to be the University of Toronto.

How do the net costs compare and how much in loans will you have to take at each school?
I’m also not sure that MCC communications will qualify for the extra two years of OPT (which one does have to apply for and is not guaranteed). Here are the STEM jobs (only ones that can qualify for extra two years of OPT, AFAIK) that have the word communications in them, so definitely something to look into:
Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications
Electrical, Electronic and Communications Engineering Technology/Technician
Telecommunications Technology/Technician
Radar Communications and Systems Technology

Thank you! My family can support me for completing undergraduate study no matter in which universities. However, if I continue to study after graduating from NYU, my parents will face a financial burden then.
Going where you have friends and will be happy may be an emotional decision, but it is not irrational. It is very difficult to succeed in undergrad if you are not happy. Go to UTSG. It’s the right decision for fit, economically, academically and emotionally.
