My D got into several colleges, and now narrowed down to Emory and University of Toronto. Here are the factors,

Asia Canadian

Toronto is about half of the total cost of Emory, no aid in both schools

Toronto has large class size while Emory has small class size

Emory has more flexible course selection, while Toronto is more rigid

Both are fine schools

If anyone has ideas to see what other advantages that Emory has over Toronto? My D likes Emory's balanced education but not full conveniced it has clear advantages comparing with Toronto.

She is pretty much undecided in major though got into Rotman Commerce.

If you can afford it, go to Emory. If it means mega loans, then UofT.

Not mega loans, but still would like to understand the value of the different price.

I agree with tomofboston; my D is at Emory. If money is not an issue, I’d pick Emory over Toronto but not if it would cause tremendous hardship. Emory’s class size mostly averages around 20 students, so consider whether your D would be comfortable being a small fish in a huge pond (Toronto.) I don’t know how Toronto compares in these areas, but Emory is one of the most diverse college campuses in the U.S. for a private university (sizeable Asian and international population, as well as Black and Latino), a major airport hub (easy to navigate) and warmer weather. You could check how many teaching assistants Toronto uses to teach freshman seminars: my D has only had 2 TAs for large classes such as anthropology and statistics, but otherwise taught by professors who are very approachable by undergrads. My D finds the academic workload at Emory challenging but not overwhelming; students seem supportive of each other, rather than cut-throat. Unlike other Southern schools such as Vanderbilt, UNC and Duke, sororities and major sports do not reign supreme at Emory (no football team.)

@Canasia2014: Is your daughter interested in any particular academic programs yet?

My D is currently thinking Business + Environmental Sciences though it may change in future.

How you guys see a Asia Canadian to find a job in US with Emory degree? With 15% international student, there must be some trends/statistics.

@Canasia2014: No (no specific statistics on international student employment), but I’m sure they can easily find jobs. This isn’t like med. school where many don’t admit internationals. And yes, Emory would be excellent for those two. Someone was asking about these two for their son over in another thread and I explained it. The Environmental Science program at Emory keeps a low profile, but is one of excellence and seriousness. If she wants to just stick to a B-school route for security purposes, there is a concentration in the b-school that allows her to heavily engage with environmental science (or she could start in the env. sci dept and still do it). She can have her cake and eat it too.
