Updated Chance w/ final grades please!!!!

Ok, apparently, I screwed up big time in chemistry ending up with a C. Every other class, however, this semester(my third as a sophomore) I got an A. This brought my cum GPA down to a 3.59. Am I screwed for transfer admission to my dream school, Carnegie Mellon, considering chemistry is central to my major of choice???

HERE is my past history:

I'm a bit of an unusual applicant - I changed majors from business to engineering halfway through my freshman year...I haven't yet fulfilled all the 1st year requirements of the engineering program at my school, though. I will start my major coursework next semester, however:

-Junior Transfer
-Chem Engineering major at Purdue University
1st two semesters GPA : 3.61 (almost all liberal arts/consumer/family science courses)
3rd semester GPA: 3.54
Cum GPA: 3.59

3rd Semester:
-Calc III - A
-Physics 1/lab - A
-Chem 1 w/lab - C
-honors English comp(not in honors school) - A

-psychology of sexuality - A

18 credits

Next semester will be taking:
-Linear Alg / Diff Equations
-Physics 2
-Chem 2/lab (w/ research from a well known professor)
-Chem Engineering Computations

-Engineering problem solving

17 credits

(also may take Discrete Math to bump it up to 20 credits - what do you think? i feel if my GPA is low, I can maybe offset it by showing the adcom my work ethic w/ a 20 cred semester)

College ECs:

-25 + hours of volunteering
-part time job ~8 hrs a week for 5.5 months freshman year
-will have started chem research
-"Outdoors Club" member
and i could probably join a few more clubs to fill this up if needed

Recommendation: good, not great from math professor

HS GPA: 3.2
-1790 SAT

Reason for wanting to transfer:
-want to be closer to home w/out having to take plane rides
-i've had trouble functioning and making friends here due to a combination of homesickness/depression/social anxiety, etc.
-out of state tuition is already very high - private school would only be a few thousand more. scholarships are very hard too come by for change of major students(who is also out of state).
-added prestige of CMU

what are my chances?

your college gpa is a bit lower than cm would like to see, your hs gpa is below average, your sat's are way below average and your sat's leave something to be desired...its worth applying, but im not sure how strong your chances will be

best of luck

thanks, I would think at this point in my college career, SAT scores (and hs gpa) would be pretty meaningless in consideration for junior transfer, no?

can you think of anything I can do to raise my chances from now--->March 1 deadline? maybe try like hell for a few essay-based scholarships over break?

that is a big misconception...if you are required to send them in, if they are going to look at them, they are not meaningless...they will certainly be of very much diminished importance, but will still be a factor in admissions i would imagine...those essay based scholarships sound like a good idea, but try not to get too invested in cm just yet

I too was under the impression as a junior transfer your high school/ sat's played no role. Not trying to call you out, but can you actually post any evidence to back this claim up (and not a re-direction to another CC thread)? I'm sure me and the OP were not the only ones who believed this so it would be helpful. Thanks.

that is one hell of a schedule. considering the difficulty of your classes, a gpa like that is damn good... write a good essay and you're in. you're right about the SAT's and high school gpa, at this point- it's meaningless

eeesh

their website explicitly asks for hs stranscripts and sat's...if you're applying to cmu you should be able to follow me here; if they're asking for you to submit your hs transcript and sat scores, regardless of how many years or credits you've accumulated at your current school, what do you think they intend to do with them? throw them in the garbage upon their receipt? Really people? I know you guys are better than this. If they're asking for said documents, they intend to look at them and therefore they will bear at least some influence on your admission decision. Again, not nearly as much as it would have if you were applying for sophmore standing, but they will obviously play at least some role, probably a very small one, in your admissions decision...

gl

I dont think its that tough of a schedule, kinda on the par for my major

** Chances **
dufflebagjesus - not sure, probably a mid reach
xbendeanx - in w/a good essay

two different opinions - any other input?? much appreciated
