Hi-
We visited the Boston area about a month ago and my daughter (from California) really fell in love with it. Granted, things may be different if we visit in December and January, but for now she really loved the area and Northeastern has the exact major and minor she would like to study. She also loves the idea about the co-op program. I know there’s some threads on here about Northeastern but I was wondering if anyone as any updated info they could share as to what it takes to get in, honors program that I’ve read about, etc. Any info from people who recently went through the process would be great. Thank you.

Demonstrated interest is big at NEU. They don’t want to be your student’s back-up school. Was your visit recorded by admissions? Have your daughter touch base with the regional rep and have her attend the talk if NEU visits her high school. Honors admissions isn’t a huge deal from what I can tell (my D is a rising freshman in engineering) although there are housing perks. What program is she interested in? There are also numerous informational webinars online offered throughout the year. They’re quite good in my opinion.
My daughter is very interested in majoring in forensic science and minoring in ASL. She’s fairly fluent in sign language, started a club at her school, and has developed quite a large following on social media teaching other people around the country how to do sign language. When we visited the person from admissions was really impressed with that (if that means anything). This is definitely her first choice and I think she’s even going to try early decision.
Oh how interesting! One of the reasons NEU impressed my daughter was how they encouraged combined majors/double majors and combinations that appeal to the student. Last year there was an essay in the common app for NEU, but halfway through the application cycle it disappeared (no idea why). Anyway, if there’s an additional essay, I recommend doing it. Also, if her high school has students currently attending NEU, it would be great for her to reach out to them (your daughter’s counselor can help with this). My D knew another student in her major of choice, and her input and behind the scenes knowledge was really critical when she was picking a school in April.
Feel free to PM if you have any other questions.
Good luck to your daughter. Northeastern has a very highly regarded ASL program. My daughter, who recently graduated magna cum laude from another program, said that two of her toughest but also most enjoyable courses were the ASL classes she took just because she was interested. She didn’t have your daughter’s extensive experience, but they have courses at highly advanced levels for those that do come in with significant knowledge. There are also opportunities to do volunteer work. She did so at a school for the hearing impaired in the suburbs (commuter trains and Uber can extend range for those without cars). We also went to a show that the ASL program put on that was entirely in sign language. Not having any training it was a bit of a challenge for me but I looked at it as being similar to opera. It is fascinating how much you can actually deduce from body language and facial expressions, but it also helped to have a translator if I didn’t get the joke.
Northeastern hasn’t had an additional essay in decades, but last year they added a box meant for additional info, but people took it as a supplement so they removed it.
Hi @PengsPhils
Looks like my DS is correct in that there is no supplemental essay for NEU? I tried looking at the website as well and there isn’t anything on it since I thought he might be wrong.
So to confirm - only personal statement essay for NEU?
Thank you
@brown2024 Correct.
