I've heard a few people talk about updates, but I was wondering how common, and important they might be. Is it frowned upon? I have a couple of major competitions coming up that I'd like them to know of, if I win, and I think I have a great chance of winning. So, if I did win, would it be a good idea to send them an update, along with the midyear report maybe? I've also led a couple of volunteer efforts since I submitted my application, would that be worth telling?

Yay! I competed yesterday and got 1st! Woo! Going to state!

Well, anyway, how would I do this? Simply send a letter saying that I'd like to update them on how my senior year has come? And should I send it with the midyear report? While I', on that.... how does one go about sending midyear reports? (the ones on the Common Application)

I gave my midyear report to my counselor and asked her to send it when semester grades go out, which won't be until another 2 weeks because we're still taking finals. As far as the update, I would write a letter with updates reinforcing why you want to attend Rice, reinforcing your interest, and nicely bragging about how awesome you are and why you deserve to go.
Good luck!
