I was wondering how much being Hispanic helps people get into college. I applied ED to Penn Arts and Sciences. When I was filling out my common app, I put down Hispanic, but I was forced to specify Spain. I don’t know if they care about Spain because it’s basically white. Let me know what you guys think!!!
I don’t think it really matters unless there’s a severe lack of people from Spain!
@bichon_frise99 Its not about people from Spain. Elite schools often want diversity, so just being hispanic can change the group with which you are competing to a certain extent. OP, if the hispanic applicants have lower test scores or stats and less ECs, and you have very high stats/big ECs, then it could be an advantage. It is up to you to make yourself stand out with test scores, GPA, ECs, and your essays; that is what will differentiate you from other hispanic applicants. So overrall, it CAN be an advantage, but it is up to you to make it one.
Hispanic doesn’t mean people from spain @bichon_frise99 .
Being hispanic can absolutely help in admissions but it’s only a small extra boost probably. I would probably say if you had the exact same test scores/extracurriculars than say, an Asian applicant, you would probably get in over them just because being an underrepresented minority gives you a little boost.
@uwuowo I know but OP said he was forced to specify Spain that’s why I said that.
For top tier schools, every hook is precious.
