<p>it’s generally a bell curve distribution (not always, but usually)</p>
<p>so it’s about beating the average of your peers</p>
<p>this is how a score of 70% when the average on an exam is 30% can be a great grade</p>
<p>and then a = 4.0, a- = 3.7, b+ = 3.3, b = 3.0, c = 2.0, etc.</p>
<p>ok but what constitutes an 3.7 for example? Is it done be percent (i.e. 88-93% = 3.7) or by the curve (i.e. top 10% = 4.0)?</p>
<p>like in ur example, is a 70% from the curve a 2.0 (because it is a C)?</p>
<p>right, by the curve - maybe not top 10% get an a, but there are grade percentages explicitly set out in some class syllabi</p>
