Share your stories, your passion towards Penn, your stats, if you'd like, your current school, and any other info you find useful.

I am currently a freshman at SUNY Binghamton University which is a fairly good college, the best state school in NY (and there are quite a few). I applied as a regular decision freshman applicant last year and was flat out rejected. In retrospect, while I had decent ACT's (31), one fairly good essay and great extracurriculars and recs, my GPA (88/100) and second essay pulled me way down. So, I'm doing some good research and reading and working my butt off at my current school.

Penn has always symbolized the ideal of a college education - not to sound like an admission office brochure, but from my several visits, I have found the possibilities truly boundless. I wasn't very surprised my rejection by the time it came around... I almost lost all hope by then anyway. Instead, it fired me up, and I decided I'll really give it everything I have this year and hope for the best. Again, in danger of sounding like every other applicant, Penn is the one place I feel like I truly belong.

I just transferred to Penn from SUNY Binghamton, so I was in a similar situation[it is doable]. I had never applied to Penn as a freshman though. Best of luck in the process.

Can you tell me a little mor about the process? It'd really help if you shared your stats and extracurriculars from HS and especially Bingh... meaning, what you did here that you think stood out. Also, how did you approach the "Why transfer?" essay and the "Why Penn?" essays?

Penn is my dream school. It has been since my early high school years. I applied as a freshman for fall 2008, regular decision. I was rejected, unfortunately. i was completely shocked because my recs were good and i had AMAZING essays. i hired a professional to help me with them. they were perfect and tailored to penn.

anyway, now I'm a freshman at santa monica college. I'm definitely applying again to Penn for fall 2009. my major would be international relations.
here are my stats:

HS GPA: 3.9 weighted, 3.6 unweighted
College GPA: so far its 4.0, but then again the semester just started. I had taken college classes before during high school and i got a 4.0.
SAT I: 1940 (should I retake it? maybe since I'm older now, i would get a better score)
SAT II: Spanish 710, US History 670, Math Level 2 660

I'm in the Scholars Program at my community college. I'm taking scholars classes, which are tough.
I work part time at Ruehl No. 925.

Extra Curriculars in HS: Feature Editor on school newspaper, member of key club (community service) for 3 years, danced ballet (still doing that)
Extra Curriculars in College: Commissioner to the Director of Budget Management aka Finance Committee Secretary (in the Associated Students), am going to join Phi Theta Kappa, hope to find a business internship for the winter session at my college

I'm at Emory University and i love it, but Penn has always been my goal. For some reason when app time came around I didn't even apply to Penn, probably because I was in 7 AP classes and 4 college classes and my parents were already *****ing about paying $500+ for app fees. (And they are paying for my college in full, 45k/yr...why they complained about fees? who knows..) So me applying to Penn as a transfer student is going to kind of be a way of seeing if I really could have made it. If i get in, great!..I will have to seriously consider what direction I want my life to go in, whether I should stay at my already great school that I love, or if I should start over for the prestige of an Ivy and go to a school I always wanted to attend. If i don't get in, I still love where I am!

My Stats:
SAT: 1340 / 2050 (prob wont send)
ACT: 32, 33 super'd; 12 writing
GPA: approx 3.75/4.0
HS Rank: 5/650
14 APs, 10 college courses (4 at a state university, 6 community college)

All of my credits together make me a junior at Emory in my 1st year (kinda crazy; the lady that processed my transfer credits said it was the most she had ever seen and that she had to ask her boss if it was even possible)

Current College Courses:
1. Calculus I - predicting A- / B+
2. Intermediate Microeconomics - predicting A, A-
3. Intermediate Macroeconomics - predicting A
4. Spanish 300 (notoriously most rigorous spanish course at Emory)- predicting A

I think the lowest my GPA should be is 3.8; and hopefully Spring term will be 4.0 (need to get out of partying phase, focus more on studying)

js, sounds good... What are your ECs though? Also, be wary of "predicting" grades. Many freshmen "predict" a 3.8-4.0, while it turns out to be a lot harder than they'd expect in the long run. I do not doubt you can get all the A's, but I wouldn't encourage predicting. Just study =)

If I'm not accepted to Cornell for Spring, I'm planning on applying to Penn for the Fall. I'd probably apply to Wharton though. I suppose it seems a bit illogical to think that if you're rejected from Cornell A&S you'd have a shot at Wharton, but I figure it would be worth a shot. I'd have another semester of grades under my belt at least, so I'd think my high school transcript would be worth at least a little bit less. If you want to see my stats, they're on the first post of the Cornell Transfer thread. And I do agree, Penn=dream come true.

I plan on applying to PENN again to SEAS for either maths or computer science. On a sort of an unrelated note which school takes more transfers , cas or seas?

I am really considering Penn as a transfer, as well as Brown. I am currently at Vassar, i am unhappy about the social situation as well as the athletics(Rowing/Crew). There is also an unhappiness that I can not brush off. I also want a large political science department, where I am not taught by visiting professors. All I need to do is keep my grades up. I will definitely apply to cas

I applied to Penn ED my senior year of high school and got flat out rejected...ouch. I'm trying to transfer because I really, really want to go there, so I'm probably gonna ask a ton of questions on this thread. To start off: does anyone know how many professor recs we need?

Horrible HS stats, but have a 4.0 GPA in college. Also, I'm a "non-traditional" student, so I have quite a bit of what would be considered extra-curricular involvement.

I'm a sophomore at NYU, applied regular decision to Penn in high school and was waitlisted-->rejected. I still don't know if I have much of a shot, but I'd be applying as a junior to A&S.

High school:
I really don't remember my gpa, but I think it was like a 3.8 unweighted, 4.2 weighted?
2100 SAT
fairly good ECs (acting, editor on school newspaper)

College:
3.7 gpa
majoring in English, minoring in creative writing and producing
ECs: current:interning (paid!) two days a week at a literary agency
summer: internship in development at a TV production company, part-time job at an independent bookstore
last year: did a lot of acting, nannied a lot
I'm going to join a club/literary publication at NYU. I'm also going to submit some of my short stories to publications in the hopes of being published.

I'm a pretty mediocre gal, but it's worth a shot!

I'm in the same situation as illusionbmore..applying to cornell for spring, if I'm not accepted I'm looking to apply to Penn's SAS. Terrible high school stats, 31 ACT, 3.95 college GPA applying for junior status to the Biology program.

If I don't get into Cornell this semester I will apply to UPenn for Fall '09.

High School:
GPA: 3.0
ACT: 26 (I know and without Writing)
Extras: FBLA, DECA, and Varsity Golf

College: Colorado State University (Resident)
GPA: 3.724 (will be 3.805 after this semester) - One 4 CR. "C," while all the rest are A's
-By the time I'm done with Spring '09 I'm confident I'll be at a 3.85 Cumulative GPA.
Major: Psychology (Honors Student)
Year: Sophomore (for Junior year transfer)
Extras: Residence Life (RA - First Year), Research Assistant (Psych Depart. - Involved for 2 semesters), and Vice President of Alpha Phi Omega (Co-ed Community Service Frat - Third Semester)
