*** UPenn RD applicants discussion thread ***

I applied to M&T (Wharton + Engineering), whose freshmen cohort is limited to 55 students each year. Life Sciences & Management’s freshman cohort, in the same way, is limited to 25 students each year.

Is penn’s engineering not good? I applied for ME at penn. People rarely talk about it. So I am wondering if it just not as popular as other schools’ or it is just very weak?

@HelloEveryone27 Penn Engineering is considered by the US News the 19th best engineering school for graduate studies (I think the same can be said for undergraduate). True, people don’t talk much about it when compared to other schools like Berkeley, Stanford, MIT or Cornell, but it’s great nevertheless.

@HelloEveryone27 I think it’s not talked about as much because other parts of Penn are much more famous, particularly Wharton and sometimes nursing

@skywalker11 @chubii Thank you.

@HelloEveryone27 When I toured Penn, they mentioned several times how SEAS was growing in popularity at Penn.

  1. It’s been my first choice since 8th grade
  2. Huntsman. Philadelphia is a great city, and UPENN is urban yet still in insulated school.
  3. Huntsman- German
  4. EA UPENN Huntsman, deferred
  5. ~2100 SAT, good GPA, solid ECS, student government president
  6. On the Wharton side, the business and public policy
  7. I like biking, reading, and traveling, I do civil air patrol and student government. Planning prom is killing me haha.
  8. Im writing yall advice and i got deferred, so I’m probably not qualified… Write about why UPENN is the school for you. If you substitute the college and the essay still kinda makes, it’s not a good essay. Also for Huntsman, take a global issue that they wouldn’t likely think of. For example, something common for Germany would be the Syrian immigrants or the Eurozone topic, but instead i chose the positive impact German international schools in Chile have a positive impact on both the immigrant and native cultures. I might have gotten deferred, but at least I had an interesting topic haha. Best of luck to you all!

Hey Everyone Could anyone be willing to give my essays a read? My scores werent that great (31 ACT and 3.92 GPA) but I believe my essay was pretty good. Just want a point of view of someone other than my counselor

@Thisishassanali - Not really much point in that now! You can’t change anything, so it’s probably best to try to forget about it until results. I know, easier said than done. :confused:

True that @Anonymoose3 . True that.

@Thisishassanali I agree it is too late, but if it’ll help your peace of mind I’m happy to!

@thisishassanali I’d be happy to read them!

@Thisishassanali - by all means post it. It will give some of the folks here something to do :smiley:

Hey guys! Does anyone have any insight into how much of an impact being recommended by the Kelly Writers House has? Also, do they just recommend everyone who sends them writing?

@tel123 I know two people who were being “recruited” by KWH, but they did not end up getting in. I dont think that it gives you a huge boost

@Helloeveryone Penn SEAS is excellent. Those rankings are focused on research spending not education quality.

SEAS has very rigorous programs. You will get a great education there. A very high percent of students have a minor or another major.

They tend to attract students with broader interests than students at some engineering schools.

@tel123 I kinda feel like they recommend everyone who sends them good pieces, but on the contrary to @anotherdude the students who were “recruited” I know have been accepted, so maybe it helps?

@kuriosmind yeah it should definitely help. I’m just saying that it doesnt give one that big a push from the reject to the accept pile

@kuriosmind @anotherdude alright, thank you both! :slight_smile:

@tel123 @kuriosmind @anotherdude From what I understand, the only actual KWH “recruits” are the ones in the end who get the email stating the KWH is supporting your application with admissions. The other students are just in touch, and encouraged to participate in KWH if they come to Penn, but they don’t have their application “supported.” Did the two people who didn’t get in actually receive that letter? I would think the letter would help if the student is a strong candidate. (and I don’t think they get that letter if the student isn’t a strong candidate)
