Last night I had a dream that I got into UPenn. Never before have I been so disappointed to have a good dream.
@indigocanine those are the WORST! There’s always a split second after you wake up where you think it was real and then reality floods in.
This is awful. I’ll be at work when they come out and I haven’t decided if I should wait it out or check and hope I stay composed if rejected
@veveve I know! I woke up screaming in my head and then after five seconds I was like “…”
Good luck everyone!
My math class today finishes an hour before decisions come out. Going to check my portals when I reach home. Good luck to all of you!
Being rejected
Expectation: “Meh. Wasn’t gonna get in anyway. Moving on.”
Reality: “Nooooooooo!” spends the rest of life crying and eating ice cream
Being accepted
Expectation: “Phew. Glad that’s over.” calmly plays it down
Reality: “Ahhhhhhhhh!” brags to everyone
on spring break…nothing to do except think about the impending decisions…
Gonna have to check during soccer practice.
To all you HSers awaiting your fate…I am a father of a daughter going through it too, with some successes (safeties) and some failures (targets and reaches)…I am also a Wall Street guy who has hired lots of people…trust me, at least in business, what college you attended doesn’t matter that much to hiring managers, especially beyond your first job)…and I have worked with several hundred successful, highly-paid people and very few attended a top 20 university…in the 1980s, it mattered…in today’s world, it really doesn’t…it pains me to see my daughter and all of you get so upset about this school vs. that school…wherever you go, it will blaze by so fast and then you’ll be facing a whole balance of your life working for a living–that is what really matters…do your best, HAVE FUN!, and build up a network of people that you can tap into to get a job–especially your HS friends parents, who will probably be your best source! Good luck today and don’t make too big a deal about these outcomes! (I think I will post this on other threads too). NJDad2020
@NJDad2020 Thank you sir!
A couple of weeks ago, I was really stressing. With a 33 act and 3.56 gap, I realized there’s not much of a chance for me even if I am Hispanic. But if it’s meant to be, then our stats don’t really matter do they?
I don’t really believe in “everything happens for a reason”, but I do think that if you have the potential to do well, and you work hard at it, then you will. No matter which college you get into.
I know everyone here has heard it 1,000 times already, but friendly reminder that you will be happy no matter where you end up, and success is relative to your drive and ability, not your school.
@captusica My DD also has similar stats. She kind of freakout around end of December and applied to a bunch more of top schools than she had planned. The irony is that she has had better results in these last minute applications to schools that she had no chance. I agree with @anotherdude … I think things are getting so insane that college admission are becoming random events (at least for the “non-curing-cancer” but still bright type of student…)
Hi guys! Just wanted to wish everyone best of luck for the upcoming results and hope everyone does well!
@PentaDad I very much agree with the fact that these top college admissions must have a large amount of luck involved nowadays for people with very similar top results.
I also think it may have something to do with relating to a student. A good essay that has a lot of character to it doesn’t just show off your writing ability - it will help the people in admissions feel like they know you more than other applicants, which means they feel closer to you and therefore less likely to reject you.
Or perhaps someone’s EC’s are very similar to one of the admissions officer’s when they were a student and they see themselves in that person.
I read an article that I’m trying desperately to find the link to :(( Someone in admissions wrote that they were more likely to want to admit someone if their application reminded them of one of their three children.
@veveve I am not entirely sure what is a “good essay”. I read many posters saying “I wrote an outstanding essay”… but have you really?!.. (I think in the back of my mind). In addition, most competitive colleges are now reading essays just once (except if you are legacy). Everything seems to add up to possible “errors” and “biases”.
If we continue at this pace, I believe in 5-7 years it will be much fair to admit students based on test scores. There won’t be any possible way that competitive colleges will be able to make decisions within a reasonable margin of error if rates go down to 3-5% (by the way… Admissions by score … This is what happen in most countries around the world, by the way! Some additional points can be added in quantitative way. Holistic process in the US is just an institutionalized way to perpetuate secret handshakes, IMHO).
Well, nobody was ever able to simplify our tax code… So I think simplifying college admissions is even more out of reach…
five hours to go
- 800 math level 2. No acceptances at anything competitive. I wish tests were as meaningful as they used to be. Good luck!
