UPenn vs. Full Ride @ Berkeley

Here's my opinion:

If 75% of you wants to go to Penn, and 25% wants to go to Berkely, go to Berkley-- That's a LOT of money to save, and a great school.

If anymore than 75% of you wants to go to Penn, which means it's like your dream school or something, then I say you dish out the money for what you really want. You will remember your college experience vividly (hopefully :)
)for the rest of your life.

Did you get accepted to the Berkeley engineering program? For business, you need to apply during your sophomore year at Berkeley. I am not sure you can do both majors at the same time.
Berkeley is very good for engineering but it is a lot of hard work. I don't know about Penn engineering.

If I were you, I wouldn't even think twice about it - go to Berkeley. Have you spent any time in Philly? Have you lived through a winter in Philly? Has your car ever been broken into in Philly? The education - hard to say one is better than the other. And I would think you'll have a wider range of people at Berkeley from different socioeconomic backgrounds. A plus to me.

Just to clarify things: It is possible for freshman at either SEAS or Wharton to transfer into M&T. I don't know how many get in, but it is possible.

tambone- I did get into Berkeley Engineering. I've only heard of one student who tried to double up in engineering & business. I heard it was pretty tough!

Wow! that must be really tough!
Can you tell me your gpa and sat's? My sister who is a junior this year wants to major in engineering.

If you look at Reply #9 (on the first page), I kinda talk about my stats.

Good luck to your sister. (tell her to get into a lot of ECs and Community Service, they help a lot for the UCs) :)

120 k is wow ... that will take u a long time to pay back ... rofl

CAL all the way ... better debate/atmosphere is great ... and its near SF

kupmup: what is o-o-s ?

o-o-s = out of state

Thanks KupMup- you're stats and ec's are great. My sister needs to work on her ec's.
Academically she will have 6 science courses + 2 computer science + 5 math classes by senior year. She has about 3.98 uw and over 4.5 UC weighted and New sat over 2200. She still has to take her sat II's.

Do you really think they care about ec's for engineering school? Are the ec's for UC regent scholarship or in general just to get in Berekeley?

kupmup: what scholarship did you get? I didn't know UCB had full ride deals, except for star athletes.

tambone: As far as I know, ECs are very important to all the UCs. In my opinion, it really shouldn't matter for engineering school, but at Berkeley, it does. Just make sure to do things that show you are in search of intellectual challenges. (example: quiz-bowl not yoga)
Also, as far as I know, EC's are good for both scholarships & admission.

joemama: The total $$$ is comprised of a couple smaller scholarships. I don't think anyone other than star athletes get a full, unsliced pie.

thanks kupmup, best of luck whatever you decide. I would pick Berkeley but be prepared to work like crazy just to keep up.

No academic credential is "almost" a guarantee for the rest of your life.

That's another reason to take the free ride.

man. 120k. some people can't make that money in years.

I got a near-full ride because of my great financial need + some work study which will go away with outside scholarships.

since you are not in the program, then definitely go to Berk

but i want to stress that you can't transfer into any 7 year programs. you must enter as freshmens because i am guessing they have different distribution or whatever other reason, but i know for a fact you can't
